Steyr-Mannlicher SM12, do I need this rifle?

I wouldnt, but not because I think theres anything wrong with it.
To me the .30-06 is simply not the right cartridge for that rifle, nor would my beloved 7mm rem be. I'd want something a little more Old World.....

If you like the gun, cartridge, and (I'm betting it's decent) scope go for it!

I've got an older left-hand Steyr MOD M Mannlicher stocked rifle in 30-06 that's a solid sub-MOA rifle. It has the shorter 20" barrel which is free floated. Bought it for my FIL (He's Austrian) for hunts when he comes over.

IF you're into the full length stocks, the Steyr is probably the way to go. I've got 2 of "Mannlicher" stocked rifles, the Mod M and a REM Mod 7 from the custom shop. Both of mine have floated barrels, so the extra stock length really has no impact other than aesthetics and a longer area to rest the gun on. They pretty much act much like a FF forearm on an AR.

My guess one would open up the cap.Cap most likely attached to the stock and just covers the bbl.

FWIW I got a Steyr Pro Hunter in .30-06 for $635 shipped (well I had to pay 25 dealer transfer on top of that) last week.
Has a 1 moa guarantee too.

My Ruger had the cap attached to the stock, slid on and was retained by a single screw.
It had ears, did not fully enclose the bbl.
Also, the ears did not clamp on the bbl, was a bit if space around.

Only go around once so if you want it get it. I might still get a Merkel.....just because. Ive wasted so much time energy and money on other crap...divorce and kids in college......at least w rifles you actually have something......and if you change your mind it has worth to others. That other stuff is just for the experience....of pain lol. If you want to pretend you have a family.....take half of your guns and throw them in the lake. Quicker and same result

Buy rifles out if want...not need. Avoids any internet argument....and maybe even drama at home
Agreed! Cause none of us can really argue with "cause I WANNA!"

And eventually our significant others either can't tell when a new one comes home, gives up and leaves us alone, or just buys one other their "things" when we get one of ours.

Good rifles.....the pleasure of them......is a bargain. Almost sinful in being such a deal.

I buy whatever i want. I pay for everything at my house (which limits the toy fund). If anybody criticizes it they can leave. Lost a lot of decent stuff way back. It has yet to be replaced. Answer to nobody. In fact the ol lady ( the ex ) asked me to buy her a sxs 20.ga today. My response not fit to repeat on a family friendly site LOL. But in that mess i did offer guidance.....said spend more and get the SKB

Fwiw my Ruger #1 RSI w bone stock trigger cloverleafed at 75 off the bag w just a 4x. Did that w two diff ammo types too. But i had the forend screw at 15 in lbs. Darn thing was a sweet shooter. Too bad it wasnt a 22" A model or id have kept it. Not benchrest level accuracy but gee whiz.....plenty of bolt rigs w some tweaking dont do that well. Ya want BR accuracy....proly have to build a BR rig.
