Anyone have any experience with a Steyr Mannlicher?

My father-in-law has offered me his, for what I believe to be a "steal" of a price. He bought it new in the mid-70's (says he thinks he paid around $750-$800 or so at the time). He probably has not shot it over a couple of hundred times. It is in excellent, truly almost like-new condition, in my opinion. Has a deep dark blue, and gorgeous wood. It is in 7x57 Mauser caliber. It has the "Mannlicher" full length stock. A couple of years ago, he ordered Cone-trol mounts and put a decent Burris scope on it.

It is marked "Steyr-Daimler-Puch A.G. Steyr, Model M". It was imported by L.E.S Skokie, Ill.

I really don't need it, but I dang sure want it!

Any opinions and experiences with Steyr Mannlichers are welcome. I am especially interested in their accuracy, as well as overall performance.

Steyr was at one time the biggest arms manufacturer on the planet- even bigger than the Mauser conglomerate. They have made top-notch rifles since the 1860s, and their post-WW1 and then post WW2 sporting rifles are generally beyond reproach or comparison.

Remember, this is the same company that built the famed Mannlicher-Schonauer rifles of the early 1900s.

Accuracy might not be dime-at-a-hundred, necessarily, but 7x57 Mauser is one great round and the rifle doubtless will shoot very well if it's in as good a shape as you say.

mine in 270 is a nice gun. action made from silk. shoots 2 inches easy with remington corelocks. mine made in the early 70's looks identical to my brothers mannlicher schonauer except my action is longer. and my stock has white line spacers.

The Steyr M rifles are very nice. Does this one have the double set triggers?

Might I ask what he's asking for it?

You mentioned the nice wood and the full Mannlicher stock, si there's a chance this one is a "Luxus" model, if it is it should be quite valuable (even if its not its still probably worth more than a grand).

Pictures would be helpful.

I picked it up today. Here's a few pics of it.

Anyone with knowledge about the Steyr Mannlicher care to comment on it, especially on the markings and stampings?

It is a Standard Model M, made in 1974. Al approriate Vienna proof marks.

Hammer forged barrel, very nice rifle. I had one in 30-06, shot well under 1MOA. I have a Luxus model with full stock in 6.5 x 57mm, shoots about 1/2 moa.

Steyr rifles are very nice.

Cheers,

JWB

I had actually forgotten about this thread. Yes, the rifle is VERY accurate. I have worked up one handload that so far achieves .3" groups at 100 yards.

jbrooks, what part of AL are you in? Perhaps we could meet up at the range someday?

Oh yeah, I switched the scope to a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x36. I think it better matches the rifle. I put the Burris on a 10-22.

I have the twin to the pictured Mannlicher M in 30-06. They are very nice rifles-maybe too nice. I've owned mine about ten years and have never hunted with it. Once a year, I take it to the range to check zero, then back in the safe it goes. I've been slowly cleaning out my "safe queens" to finance hunts. I sold a 99% Dan Wesson pistol pack this week. Last month, I dumped a Heym 270 and a Kimber 7-08. Its really hard to figure a price on a rifle like the Mannlicher carbine, since so few in mint condition are sold.
