What do you guys think of this...!?!

Thoughts....

What for???

Uncle Mike--If you'll tell us your proposed use of this rifle, and the cartridge it shoots, we could comment much more intelligently. Also--Have you handled, better yet shot, the rifle in question--In other words, does it fit you? And do YOU like its looks and handling? Steyrs are reputed to be spooky accurate, and kinda pricey.

Looking at your picture, I somewhat regret getting the Pro Hunter with the Polymer stock. But then I think the stainless action would look funny bedded in wood.

Mine is in 7mm-08 and shoots great. I really like the detachable mag, the tang safety and the slick action...I'm getting used to the longer barrel

We are supposed to start selling these, regularly, instead of special order soon. The rifles come in various calibers, all sufficient and worthy, the Classic Half Stock Series, as pictured, is fitting for a general hunting rifle.

Steyr also makes several different configurations of the rifle, labeled the Pro Varmint, Pro Hunter, Scout and several 'Tactical' type models like the SSG69, so on....

The accuracy of these rifles are phenomenal requiring no modifications, just good shooting right out of the box!

While somewhat expensive for some, they are quite beautiful, especially in their wood and steel blued configuration, and even in their synthetic make also.

Just wondering if anyone had any experience with these.

9mm...I don't know, stainless and wood looks pretty good, somedays!lol

About the only thing I can see that's bad is the price of the 'steel' magazines, a man could buy a Marlin X Series for the price of two of the magazines, but, they sure are purtty!

I got my Pro Hunter from CDNN for a steal...I'm thinking about $500, maybe a little more...I really wanted one in either 6.5x55 or .260 but they were sold out by the time I called. I settled for the 7mm-08. I mounted a Leupold "Grey" scope and rings on it to match

The thing that folks don't consider is that the Steyr is blue printed as it comes from the factory..you don't have to pay the money you would for that service on a Rem 700...and the barrels are outstanding due to how they are mounted (but it does make them hard to change)

I found the factory has the best price on the polymer mags...like the one that came with the rifle...at $42 for the flush fitting ones

And, until you work the bolt, you cannot imagine smooth and exact, I can't think of an U.S, or similar make that is as precise as the Steyr.

CDNN still has some, although they are severely limited in caliber, I was going to pick one up, but the 23.6" barreled units were only to be had in 243, 7REM MAG and 25-06, the 25-06 has some appeal, they still have a 30-06 in the 20" units.

9mm, if you ever want to ditch that 7mm-08, let me know! How has the polymer mags held up for you?

I'll sneak one in the collection soon! Well, hopefully! lol

The mags look...well, plastic...but they are very tough, very reliable...it is a form follows function thing. The two positions for insertion of the mag seemed odd at first, but can actually be useful when you just want to leave a mag in the gun and not have to worry about someone chambering a round.

I think part of the accuracy/fitting/smoothness of the rifle goes to the minimal metal removal for the ejection port and the rear mounted locking lugs

I have an Steyr SBS Pro-Hunter in .270 Win that I got from CDNN a few years back. It had a wooden stock but was on special and came with synthetic stock too. I added a 10-round mag (plus adadpter) since I'll only use it in punching papers. It is really accurate. But, I don't really care for it's butter knife bolt handle. And anybody who has one should know that there's a ring inside the action just behind the barrel that can be displaced when cleaning the bore. It's easy fix with a wooden stick (to lessen chance of scratching or a finger) but to the one who is not familiar it would be impossible to close the bolt.

Nice to know! Thanx!

I like what I see, and I really like the idea of one in 7x64mmBrenneke! I wouldn't shun one in 6.5x55mmSwede, 6.5x57mmMauser, or 6.5x68mm Von Hofe Express either; sure am glad they don't have a 9.3x64Brenneke...or i'd bout have to get one (and already having a .375H&H that is the last thing that I need). I wonder how well the full stock version would shoot. I don't have a FS rifle, and I like stuff that is different.

:)

Well, the 'full stock' rifles carry the same 1"@100m guarantee, so I recon they'll shoot also.

Yeah, that 6.5X68...hmmm, what a barrel burner but I'm thinking real hard on it! hehehehe

I like the 7X64...awesome round!

Uncle Mike, thanks for the info. It is nice to find a full stock rifle that shoots well. Most of 'em are hit or miss, or mediocre at best, and if you want a 6.5 or 7mm you want it to shoot well.

Speaking of which, we think alike when it comes to cartridge selection. Shame that you can't get a good deal on any of the good'uns.

Yeah, that's why the deal ones are....the deal ones, standard, run of the mill calibers, but hey, you can never go wrong with the good ol' 30-06, if they didn't offer at least the -06, I think I might have passed and maybe have gotten a synthetic version in 270Win. on the cheap.

you can never go wrong with [strike]the[/strike]another good ol' 30-06
Fixed it for ya. I just want something different, if not different from other folks, at least different for me (and another turn-bolt '06 ain't too different ;)).

BUMP...a little bird told me that someone here just recently purchased one of these...and that person owes us pictures (and a range report when available). :p

With the rig you plan to assemble I have a feeling that the rifle or scope won't be the limiting factor. :p
