Steyr S40 as ccw?

My S40 is in my pants as I type this :D

I own both an M40 and an S40 and I used to CCW the M ... the S is about the perfect CCW weapon (not counting Kahrs and other "subcompacts"). Its almost as thin as singlestack guns and is all rounded and smooth.

My S40 is smaller from top of slide to bottom of grip then my Makarov (mostly because of grip angle) and is slightly thinner then a Mak with red star grips. Its significantly more comfortable to carry (and having 2 more rounds of a more potent caliber is nice too).

Just get a good holster.

I've got a pancake holster I modified for IWB, but I used to have a High Noon Tail Gunner that was pretty nice too.

(most holsters on the market are made for the M. The S will fit in them fine since the controls on both line up to the same spots ... the S has a shorter grip and shorter slide, but everything else is where it is on the M)

Here it is in my new Fist Basic;

I also use one of Highnoon Mr. Softy IWB holsters

I have always carried "small of the back". I ordered a Fist 41 holster, looks like it will work out fine. Would like to try to IWB, but with my job it is hard to keep comfortable.

I use a S40 as my main carry gun. I also keep a M40 in my car. Good gun, great carry piece.

Ratfink

Is your Steyr 2tone or is that just the way the picture turned out?

I think it's both, the slide is a dark, flat charcoal color while the frame is a shinier black. it's not quite as distinct as it is in the pic though, I think the flash just reflected of the 2 surfaces differently making the color difference more drastic than it really is. But there is a color difference.

Crazy Finish

My S40 is the same. The finish of the slide is a Dark Charcoal/Dark green finish. It is more of a matte finish where the M series guns that I have are really more of a Satin black finish.

If you look at this post and check out the second picture down you can see that there is definetly a differant look to the two guns. I can't think why they would finish the guns differently. What really got my attention was when I put my S40 in the same holster that I had been using for my M series guns. Keep in mind that everything about the Steyr pistols are exactly the same except for the barrel lenth and the handgrip lenth. Both things that have nothing to do with how a pistol should fit in a holster. When I tried to pull out the S40 it was like it was stuck in the hoslter. After measuring the hell out of my pistols I finally decided that the only thing it could be was the finish.

Now that I'm looking at the finish on the slide, I think it might be either Park on smooth metal, or that Cold Park stuff that you can rub smooth.

The steyr finish is some sort of coating similar to tennifer...it is extremely tough whatever it is...not a scratch in mine.

Earlier models had a glossier moly coat of some sort...much "blacker" looking.

My S40 has the glossier black finish ... my M40 has a flat black finish (my M40 is a very early gun ... the PO sent it back to the factory for the trigger upgrade).

If I had the greenish finished S40 I think I'd consider having the slide hardchromed.

last person I heard had his steyr hard chromed developed bunch of problems and wound up ditching it to someone else.

the parkerizing is not always green. mine is dark grey though spot or two on it. if I were to have the finish redone I will admit black hardchrome sounds nice though so does parkerizing under molyresin/teflon finish 2 finishes actually and that moly resin stuff is basicly same thing Steyr used before they went to parkerizing.

would probably send my gun to www.shootiniron.com website sucks but hear nothing but good things about the finish.

I believe that was someone in this fourm ... however the problem is they also had the extractor hard chromed ... this guy had replaced the extractor before selling but hadn't shot it yet.

I wonder if replacing the extractor fixed the problem.

EDIT: here's the thread http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=60293

I have been thinking about sending my S40 to shootingiron for a nice refinish. I have also heard that they do amazing work. I checked into their pricing it at from what I am reading they are only going to charge me $35 to refinsh my slide!! That seems really cheap to me.

Zundfolge,

I've had an M40 for a couple of years now. Serial No. 10XXX. Do you know if that falls within the early bunch that needs the trigger upgrade?

the best way to tell if your Steyr has the upgraded trigger is to look at the side of trigger. There is a pin in it that appears to guide the trigger safety.

On the original triggers this pin was about a quarter of the distance from the bottom of the trigger to the top of the trigger. On the upgraded trigger it's about halfway up the trigger.

here's a picture of the early trigger

and here is the upgraded trigger

My M40 is in the 5XXX range, I'm pretty sure by the 10,XXX range they are new triggers.

Zundfolge,

Thanks for the info/pics and quick reply. I think mine looks like the newer one, but I'll check it out for sure when I get home.
