I've searched all over this forum and while I have seen a few posts mixed in other threads, I still have not really been able to find enough info.

For those of you that own an S40, what holster are you using, I'm just not able to find anything. I'm sure that there are probably holsters for other pistols that might work, but I'm not sure which. Also I've looked at almost every holster dealers site and have anly found a few made for the M40/M9, but nothing for the S40.

Oh and could we please not let this turn into the old "Steyrs are unsafe" discussion, almost every thread I've read here about the steyr has turned into that, which contributed to my difficulty in finding the info I was looking for.

Thanx for any help you can give.

well. i carry my M in a galco fletch...I suppose you could purchase the fletch, and cut the muzzle area down to size, and reinforce the stitching...or have a leather smith do it for you, and reburnish the cut ends of the leather.

From what i know, the dimensions of the pistol are the same aside from the muzzle length and grip length, and the holster is not concerned with the grip length.

M 40 holster

Try Andy Artoonian. Ordered his 'deep concealable'; delivery was sooner than promised (about 4 or 5 weeks). Fit and finish excellent; lightwieght, comfortable, works great. My next buy will be another of his models. See at
www.horseshoe.co.uk I have used this exclusively for daily carry, more than a month, now; holds secure, no deformation or deterioration, and is specifically shaped to the Steyr M.
The angle he preslected for this holster results in a great carry -- no printing, and can be micro-adjusted for the wearer's own particulars.

Before that, I used a Smartcarry. Found it a little awkward in the sitting position (maybe an S model would work better with this placment. After some weeks, I started carrying it as an IWB, at about 3:00. Worked ok, but with no slide guard, was uncomfortable without an undershirt. If you take this route, order a 'small' -- the medium he sent when I specified the length, etc., of the M is too big -- I wound up folding over a hunk. When i converted to the IWB position, though, it needed the depth... See at www.smartcarry.com.

Congratulations on choosing a great weapon.

I have been using a Bianch Minimalist 105 now for a little over 3 years. I first used in with my Steyr M9 and then with my S40. I also had a Taurus PT140 for a while that fit in it nicely. It was pretty tight at first, but with time it started to loosen up. I cut off the cheesey little rubber loop that was supposed to hold the gun in, it wasn't needed.

If you would like to look at other holster manufacturers I would check out Galco and Highnoon they both make very nice holsters. If a company doesn't make a holster for the Steyr pistols I found that the Steyrs fit in a Berreta 92 holster perfectly. Also you can buy holsters at www.usasteyr.com they have a plastic and leather holster available.

I just gave away a High Noon Tailgunner with Clip IWB holster for a Steyr M (any Steyr M hoster will work for an S). It was pretty nice, but rode a little high for my liking. Ask Sbert1 how he likes it.

I had a holster made by fellower TFLer Mark Waldon. However I don't think he's making holsters anymore. Anyway its a regular old OWB, belt slide pancake style holster.

Well I had PCRCCW (who makes holsters http://www.hbeleatherworks.com/ ) send me a couple of holster clips and some Chicago screws and I converted my pancake holster to an IWB. Whenever I get access to a digital camera I'm going to put together a bunch of pics (maybe an instruction manual in PDF or something). I wish I had a Steyr M holster form to give him ... I'd love to see him make hosters for the Steyrs.

Anyway, since I converted this holster I'm a firm believer in the pancake IWB holster (like the VersaMaxII and Watch6 made by MiltSparks ... not sure if they make a Steyr holster).

As I type this my S40 sits snuggly and comfortably at my side at my side. :D

Kydex Holster

Flashpoint I ordered one of those Kydex holsters and it was the bulkiest thing I ever tried to use. I think I would have done better to put my gun in a coffee can and tie it to my waist!!! I guess I shouldn't bash it too much maybe you have one and like it but for me it was just not the right holster for the job. I still have it sitting around. I keep meaning to auction is off sometime.

sturmruger,

So you have experience with those things, huh. I never tried one, just knew about them. I would like to have a kydex for my M40 but can't find a cheap one. If you don't like yours have you thought about doing a "S series kydex holster karma" thing?

whoo hoo 500 post, watch out skunky:D :p

Thanx for your input guys, I will check all of it over and see if anything works for me. One of my biggest problems is I'm not sure if I want an IWB or OWB pancake style holster. I'm new to concealed carry, and IWB seems like it might be a bit uncomfortable, and I would have to buy all new pants, 2 sizes bigger. I am getting a IWB for my S&W 342 since it's a little smaller, and I wouldn't even consider IWB for my Springfield 1911A1, but the Steyr is right in the middle. I lean more toward a high-ride pancake style.

Oh well, I'll got check out the info you guys posted, thanx again.

The problem I think that you would have with the IWB carry is the gun being too fat, so with that in mind you 1911 would work just fine. I have a Highnoon Hidden Alley that I carry my M40 in (it also works for my p239)as long as I'm wearing the right pants. OWB is great as long as you have a cover garmet, but sometime the occassion doesn't allow for a cover garmet.

If I'm in a posistion of not being able to wear a shirt that would cover, I would always have the option of packing my S&W 342 in a IWB holster.

BTW, I noticed that the leather holster Steyr has is for both pistols, the problem I have with that and all the other holsters for the M series is that I would rather not have that extra bit of holster sticking down, it kind of negates 1/2 the reason for getting an S series.

I was a little concerned about the extra bit of holster at the muzzle (using an M hoster for an S) but its less then half an inch and you really don't notice it. The shorter grip is 90% of what makes the S conceal better then the M.

I find IWB carry to be comfortable enough once you get used to it (at the least its not UNcomfortable) while OWB is more comfortable it doesn't conceal unless you're wearing a coat and never bend over or sit down ... might as well strap on a tactical thigh holster :p Cops get away with it because they have a badge cliped to their belt right next to the holster so that when someone sees it (thats when NOT if) they see the badge too.

With a decent holster I think you'll find that the Steyr S40 conceals well and comfortably without having to invest in new pants. I find that all I do is adjust my belt out one hole and I'm fine (I do have one pair of pants I have to leave the top button undone or its a bit tight).

OK, I ordered a Fist close cropped shortcut from gunners alley Here because they make them for the M 9/40, I also had them add a retention screw and body protector (That flap of leather between the gun's upper and you)

I also bought a couple Mr. Softy's from High Noon Here , one for my 342 and one just to try IWB with my steyr, it's basically the same as the Hidden Ally, but not tuckable, since I never tuck in my shirts, I didn't need that feature

Thanx for your help guys.

The Fist looks like a real nice set up. I think you'll like the Mr. Softy too. As it's name implies, it's real soft so if your driving for a while you can take the gun out and never notice the holster is there. Have fun and good shootin'.

The guys at Gunners Alley contacted me today asking if my pistol was an S series because they wanted to make sure the barrel length was correct (these are built as you order, a 4 week wait), I guess it's because I marked barrel length as 3.5 inches, I suggested that they need to list the S series in their choices because of the lack of Holsters made just for this gun, hopefully they will since they obviously know about it.

So far though, just them checking with me gets a thumbs up in the customer support column from me.
