Ever since I read my first article about the Steyr line of handguns I have been excited to own one of the M series handguns. Since reading that first article I have been lucky enough to purchase three Steyr pistols M9, M40, and S40. Here is a Link to a past thread with some pics.

I was excited to find the new USA Steyr website . The entire Steyr line is distributed by a company in Montezuma, IA. I use to live 15 minutes from there and wish they would have started distributing the Steyr line a long time ago. They have a new 9X21mm barrel for sale on their website. The reason for this post is to ask if anyone has an M series gun chambered in 9X21mm. If you don’t have a Steyr in 9X21 do you own a gun from another manufacturer with the same caliber? Does anybody have a good website that would help compare the ballistic differences between the .357 Sig, and 9X21mm? I am trying to decide which barrel to purchase.

P.S. I would prefer to keep this thread from turning into a debate on the safety of the M, and S series pistols. Thanks
:D

The 9x21 conversion sounds pretty interesting.

I wonder if a 10mm conversion would be possible ... would the extra 4mm of length fit in the .40 mags? (.40S&W = 10x21 and 10mm =10x25). I can't help but drool over the idea of an S10

I also wonder if there are .357sig barrels available (especialy for the S40 ... especialy since I have one now :D ).

As factory loaded in Europe, the 9x21 is ballistically the same as 9mmP.
Therefore it is not as powerful as .357 SIG. It was devised as a commercial caliber for sale in Italy where military calibers are completely prohibited from private ownership. It has 3mm longer brass but the bullets are seated deeper for an OAL that will work in guns normally chambered for 9x19.

There was some use of 9x21 in USPSA after 9mm Major was banned and before the double column 1911 derivative guns came out. It had to be loaded very hot to make Major power factor but was a rule beater because there were no SAAMI specifications for it and nobody could say for sure it was being overloaded. Wear on Tanfoglios was high. Few people bother with it now that 28 shot .38 supers are available.

I see no advantage in having a 9x21 gun or barrel unless you live somewhere like Italy where that is all you can own.

I would go with 357sig myself.

where on steyr usa website is the barrels listed?

steyr has couple locations in iowa one is montezuma other is up by waterloo/cedar falls area forgot the name. they ever get that parts shipment in that is/was taking forever?

Yes there are two locations in IA. The Waverly location is where all warranty items are to be sent. If you want to find the parts list start at the main Steyr USA Website click on the heading that says Schematics scroll down. They have an exploded view of the M series pistol with a corresponding parts list below that.

I really apreciate all the good info on the 9X21. It sounds like my best bet is to stick with the .357 Sig. It sounds like it will be almost impossible to find ammo in 9X21.

Steyr S357

They do not have a .357 barrel for the S series Zundfolge. I keep meaning to try my full size barrell in my S40, but have not gotten around to it yet.

well when you do you'll see how the M barrel binds up going into the S slide.

I wonder if the muzzle end of the M barrel was threaded if it would be small enough that it wouldn't bind.

A surpressed S9 or S40 would be pretty cool.

Gunsmith

I bet you could buy a .357 Sig Barrel and then have a gunsmith or machinist trim it down to the correct lenth. That would be perfect!!!
