My permanent residence is in CA, however, I also have a secondary residence in Florida, I have Florida ID and a Non-resident FL CCW.

I saw a really nice STI Guardian 1911 style 9mm pistol, that was priced right, for sale in a FL gunshop. With the combination of FL ID and CCW, I can purchase this gun with no waiting period. Apparently, it is not on the CA DOJ approved list. If i buy it in FL, can i bring it in to CA and use it there?

I am returning to CA early next week by commercial air carrier.

When you are in FL residing as a resident, you can legally purchase the handgun.
After which, you can legally return to CA with the handgun (as long as the handgun is not defined as an assault weapon).

Just remember that you can not legally bring any large capacity magazines that you legally aquire in FL back to CA.

It's just sad that these questions even have to be asked:mad::banghead::mad::banghead:

Could my father-in-law, who has been a FL resident all his life, buy the gun and then gift it to his daughter (my wife) for Christmas?

If he can do this, can he ship it to us in CA or do we have to transport it to CA ourselves?

Yes, your father-in-law can give his daughter a handgun that's not on the roster. Still, no mags with capacity greater than ten.

However, the father needs to send it to a FFL in California. There's a place on the transfer form bypassing the roster for a out of state parent-to-child gift.

And, yes it's sad these questions have to be asked. However, I believe the days of the California roster and less-than-standard capacity magazines are coming to an end.

harrygunner is correct.

Federal laws require the handgun to be transfered through a CA FFL dealer.
However, there is an intra-familial handgun gift exemption to the CA DOJ approved list.

In CA, the intra-familial gift exemption is only considered valid between grandparent - parent - child - grandchild.
