Against my better judgment, I decided to completely disassemble my 1911 last night. In doing so, I was shocked to discover that the internals of the gun absolutely reeked of dead fish, like a old tackle filled with well-used lures.

Anyone else have this happen? Kinda odd and just a tad bit concerning.

It hasn't happened to me, yet...However, with it disassembled, I wouldn't use Hoppes for your cover-up...To me, that is the worst smell....:)

Sounds like some organic oil was used and it went rancid. No biggy. Just flush it with brake cleaner and oil it up again.

Update, I just finished re-assembling the lower portion of my 1911.
Despite the stench, it was an extremely satisfying experience. I just wish I had new parts that I could have installed in it while I had it apart.

If I was somewhere, and my gun got wet, and I had to clean it but had no gun oil - I'd use olive oil, or vegetable oil, etc. But I'd sure hope I remembered to clean it off and use real gun oil later!

I bought a can of military gun oil at the surplus store. It smelled rancid. I wasn't sure until I smelled some good stuff. My pistol smelled awful. So old oil can get a nasty stink to it. I thought all petroleum based oil was organic?

By organic I mean something like fish oil or sperm whale oil. Something a bit closer to it's original form that has all the good things needed to rot. There are a number of fully synthetic oils out there.

adweisbe,
I kniw what you meant. I wasn't sure besides the fully synthetic oils. MY point was that the smell comes from bacteria, so maybe the same kind that make rotten fish oil smell are making his rotten gun oil smell.
MY other thought about a gun that smells like fish is not high road at all.

Natural sourced oils such as vegetable oil, olive oil can 'go bad' and become rancid. Same thing for wax (beeswax, carnuba) and grease.

You didn't grease your gun with a slab of bacon didja?

Perhaps the decomposition product of nitrogen residue from the gun powder. What ammo do you use? Fiochi?

The oil on paintballs smells like total rotten crap too... i think it's fish oil or something like that. I've eaten many a paintballs playing paintball in my day...yum. It's too bad I don't get out to play much anymore. Guess I'm getting old and lazy, it seems.

Cheesy- just clean her out with some solvent and re-apply some new oil.

I remember getting some free sample tubes of Tetra gun cleaner from a gun show.....stuff smelled like ass!!! I hear they changed the formula so it would smell better, but have not bought any to verify.
