I have Cooper rifle with a AA Claro Walnut stock. They finish their stocks by hand using a product called Deft Step Saver Original Finish. The color used is Natural & Tint Base. I'm not sure, but I believe this is an oil type finish.

My question is - I would like to apply something to the wood that will deepen and create a richer look. For those wood/stock experts, what do you recommend I use?

That's a blend of natural linseed oil and polyurethane. The pores of the wood are going to be very thoroughly sealed with a kind of plastic material. I doubt you're going to get much penetration of any additional stain.

Deft says you can top-coat it though with their "Water Based Polyurethane, Waterborne Clear Wood Finish, Defthane Polyurethane, Interior Polyurethane, or Clear Wood Finish Brushing Lacquer." Those are mostly clear finishes, though.

Might want to drop them a line and see if they think you can get a darker finish by applying more of one of their stains before you do that.

Thanks for the info Sam. The stock is really nice; I was just interested to learn if there was something I could do to make it even better.

I will contact Deft and see if they have any suggestions. I would be happy with it just the way is.
