I went to the gun store last Sunday to see their new goodies. They still didn't have the Remington 700 VS, but there was a savage fp10. I test handled it and dry fired it after asking the shop assistant. The trigger is so ......... sweet: light and crisp. It might be the best trigger I have ever saw on a rifle out of the box. Action is also nice, though I am not sure whether it could be compared to a Winchester or Remington action. The heavy target barrel is nice and the balance is good, and it is still not too heavy with this BBR.

The biggest cone, as most of you guys said, is the Stock!!! I was looking at the regular FP10 with 24' barrel. The stock configuration is OK for me, but the material is reall like a joke! It is too plastic:neener: . even inferior to some air rifle stock in my opinion. I handled a Rem 700 PSS before, and the stock on that rifle is much much better than the FP10 stock. I could even easily bend the forend to touch the free floating barrel, this concerned me a lot, it will definitely affect the POI and accuracy.

I found that savage provide FP10 also with Choate and McMillan stocks. Unfortuantelly the gun store didn't have them. Are they much better than the original stock? What are they made of? Which stock configuration do you guys prefer? I am not sure now since I didn't have a chance to handle them. But from the website they also look both weird to me (not a usual familiar style!)

I also heard that several company make aftermarket stocks for Savage FP10 rifles, could you guys give me some information and links? Thanks?

The McMillan is a fiberglass epoxy composite with additional fillers like silica and/or graphite in some models. The Choate is (or at least seems to me) a plastic but I'm sure of a different type/make tham Savage's standard material.

The 10FP- LE2 ships, IIRC, with the McMillan stock. The last time I priced them they were around $800.

mcmillan is very nice. contact the webmaster (rick bin) at www.24hourcampfire.com to see what he has. you're not likely to beat his price... but, macs are not cheap...

also check out boyd's stocks, if you don't mind laminate. they are about the best priced laminate. www.boydboys.com but, be forewarned... the boyd's stocks will need a little work on your part to get them to fit perfect.

high road member Detritus has a good summary of stocks available for Savage in THIS thread.

also, the Hogue overmolded stocks will be out in late summer, early fall.

may as well repost some of the info and sum it up better.

McMillan is pretty much THE top of the line, but you'll pay as much ore more for teh stock as you do for the complete barreled action. this being said i personally wasnt a savage with an "A5" stock someday... Website HERE

Choate, well everyone's seen um, i don't like em myself (too heavy, and just don't fit me correctly) so i don't have a link. same stocks found on the Savage website as an option to the LE line, the "ultimate" line (Ult. Sniper/varmint) of stock was supposedly designed by John Plaster, author of the book Ultimate sniper. guess what works for him just don't for me.

Bell and Carlson: popular stocks for savage for some reason, but they also have a presistent defect int eh inletting that they are NOT adressing, you have to reshape the recoil lug recess and custom bed the action to get it to even sit straight in the stock! also B&C is who makes the factory units for savage.... even if the rest of their line is much better that does not give me much confidence.

Stockade Brand stocks, these are what i see as the best option out there for Savages. they're available from Lock Stock And Barrel and Sharp Shooter's Supply . these are available in several styles, and in pre-painted ready to drop-in, or skim-bed (preferred) and in unpainted but filled and primed from both sellers. Lock, Stock, And barrel also carries a "moneysaver" option that is basicly a stock fresh from teh mold and clean up a bit, YOU have to fill prime and paint.
My advice is go with Sharpshooter supply as they have any and everything you'd want for a savage.

Hope that helps.....

It really helps alot. Thanks guys for your valuable information.

Now I am still saving money for my AR, and I already put my eyes on the Savage FP10, Isn't this a sin:banghead: . How many rifles do I need to have untill I could be satisfied.

I just got an e-mail from Sharp Shooter Supply that my Varmint/Tactical stock for my .308 10FP will be shipped tomorrow.

It is made of denser foam and stiffer lay-ups than the McMillan stock. At it goes for $195 (prime and filled, ready for your own camo job) or a bit more for their paint.

Of course, my 10FP was a .5MOA rifle with both the factory plastic as well as with its current Choate Plaster Disaster stock.

I wrote a review on the Bell and Carlson Duramaxx which should be on SavageShooters.com soon.

Here's the link to my review: http://www.ocabj.net/reviews/duramaxx/duramaxx_review.html

I definitely second the notion of buying the Sharpshooter Tactical/Varmint for $195 unpainted (primed). At most you need is a few cans of Krylon Camo paints and you're set to go. It's a good mid-cost stock.

I love the McMillan A-5 though. It's a finely crafted stock. I paid $540 for mine, bought directly from McMillan, so it's not cheap. But if you buy a McMillan, you will never feel like you wasted money on the stock.

just to spread the news....

Fred (the owner) at Sharpshooter has confirmed that he, and i beleive the guys at stockade, are working on an A5 near-clone, to be released sometime later this year (probably late fall since they're still refining the "prototype" from which the mold(s) will be made.)

info found HERE and over at Snipershide.com

just thought i'd share..:)
