I have just bought a new Stevens 200 in .308 and I will be getting a new heavy barrel. The factory stock is too thin to be modified for the heavier barrel. The magazine is not attached to the reciever and does not open from the bottom. What would be a nice stock that won't break the bank.

Lot's of good options - do you have a preference for wood, laminate, or synthetic?

Most any stock for a Savage Model 10 centerfeed will work. I have a good one but it's for a staggerd feed. If you decide on solid wood or laminate,Boyd's offers a couple of very nice stocks for <$100. <http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/Prairie-Hunter-Replacement-Stocks-Savage-Stevens-s/167.htm>

I am very partial to Bell & Carleson stocks when I'm looking for a synthetic unit.

B&C is an excellent option. I put one on a Savage Model 111,300 win mag. Made a world of difference! As I recall,I paid almost $200 for it though.

Check out Stockade Gunstocks. They make anything from plain-jane to custom.

Edit:
and I will be getting a new heavy barrel.
Send them your barrel & action and they will mount the barrel at no additional cost.
