Wandering in the woods and stumble on some stolen guns, what are the odds? This is not me BTW.

Well here was an unusual one that I found one day during my lunch hour. mtn_goat and I were geocaching at lunch and were having trouble finding the last leg of a multicache (It turns out it was missing). It was in a small wooded area inside of a city, So we wondered off to another cache that was only a few hundred feet away. On the way back to the multi at a distance of 50 feet from cache, I spotted something under some brush. I pulled it out thinking, well it could be the cache.... but having a bad feeling it wasn't.

Opened it and found what looked like a single shot 20 gauge shot gun, and a remington bolt action rifle with scope. I was thinking.... I wonder if I can swap some geocaching swag for the rifle. But I didn't think that the cops would believe I found a gun case with one gun and a travel size playdoe. :D That whole "Possession of a stolen firearm" being a felony, decided it might not be that great of a trade.

Called the police on the non-emergency line, and waited 20 minutes on hold before I could talk to anyone. And another 10-15 for the police cruizer to show up. The officer was a bit curious about why we were in the woods, and we had to explain geocaching to her. The officer called me back later, and was curious to know if a geocacher may have placed this out there. I of course said no, I thought it was kids that stole it and they stashed it in the woods near thier house since they wouldn't be able to sneak it into thier house. The officer did tell me they were stolen and the owner was happy to get them back.

In the end, an exciting day of geocaching but we were very late getting back from lunch that day.

Good for the Cachers! Nice of 'em to return the stolen firearms! I cache a lot in the winter, but have never found anything really good like that!

Geocaches are often ammo cans hidden in hollow stumps. Down in Olympia, one of our locals saw an ammo can down inside a stump and pulled it out, only to see another underneath it. He ended up taking home three cans full of 9mm. Nearby he found several bags of military clothing hidden similarly.

In hindsight, I have to wonder if it had anything to do with the big gear thefts on Ft Lewis.

On their toes, as usual...

Yeah the Olympic Peninsula is known for having people caching stuff out here . Several years a go we had this one paramiltary nut running around out here , he would set traps and cache weapons and ammo on other people's property . Eventually he got in some legal trouble for flashing guns at people as they drove by his lot as his wife/gf would film them . A coupe of years after he was incarcerated dirtbikers would come upon various caches of ammo when riding off the trails , a coworkers son ended up showing me where he had stashed 3K of 7.62X39 :)

Nothing to do with the stolen guns, but this thread introduced me to geocaching. I spent a bunch of time on the 'net last night reading up on it (I'd never heard of it before), and this weekend I'm gonna go hunting! Looks like fun!

"BUCKY'S" GUNS

They recovered most of his stash. Expect they'll find the rest after surveying family and "associates"

"State Police in Kane, Pennsylvania arrested a McKean County man accused of helping Ralph "Bucky" Phillips. They also recovered 33 guns they say were stolen from a gun shop in Chautauqua County last weekend.

Todd A. Nelson, 31, of Ludlow, Pennsylvania was arrested on August 30 by Pennsylvania Troopers after 33 guns stolen from a gun shop in Chautauqua County last weekend, were discovered in his residence."

On his way back "home" now...:)
