Aaaaarggggggggh!
:fire: :fire: :fire: :fire:

I've been practicing for the CMP Garand and Springfield shoots at Camp Perry. Like an IDIOT, I left my four rifles in my car overnight. Nice neighborhood, never any problems, and I thought it would just be easier to leave them in the car. I'm shooting them every few evenings and I've got a lot of neighbors w/ John Kerry signs to whom carrying one hunting rifle or shotgun to the car once every Fall is questionable.

Some losers came through and broke into at least 7 cars in the immediate area - including mine.

So...along with learning from my stupid mistake - DON'T EVER LEAVE YOUR GUNS IN THE CAR! -- please report to the police anyone trying to sell you the following rifles:

Springfield M1 Garand - Serial #2563520
Springfield M1 Garand - Danish w/ VAR Barrel - Serial #271619 -- This one had a new leather Turner "Carlos Hathcock" sling
Eddystone 1917 - Serial #213986 -- This one had an original issue Boyt's leather sling
Remington 1903A3 - Sporterized Stock - Serial #3838734

In nice Boyt's tan and/or camo cases.

:cuss:

Harsh. I suspect the idiots will try to pawn those or sell them off the first chance they get, so if you keep your ears open locally you'll probably be able to recover them. Ciminals aren't going to want to have that heavy iron around very long.

Just reading that felt like someone hit me in the gut.
I can only imagine how you feel.

thats awful..I hope your rifles are found and returned to you.these things happen and not just in the other neighborhoods.did you have insurance?homeowners may cover it if the car was parked on your property...I dunno.

insurance can never replace your favorites I know but perhaps filing a claim might get them working on it too.prolly a couple of kids looking for some stereo stuff.

Never and I mean never leave a firearm in an unattended car.

You're right. No excuse.

These guys could not have seen the guns before breaking in, and this is my first theft or break-in after living in this neighborhood for 14+ years, but I simply should not have left guns in the car overnight.

The Police Officer who took the report pointed this out, and followed up with a quick "Of course, you're the victim here", so even though the Chief officially dislikes armed citizens, the troops are definitely on our side.

High deductable, but insured. But insurance doesn't cover my stupidity or stop these guys from getting bolder.

I'm finding that Garands don't stay on the shelf long these days. That's definitely a good thing, because it means there are more serious shooters and history buffs out there. I just need to track one down soon to keep practicing.

I love the way people keep on hammering ReadyontheRight. I think he's figured out that he made a mistake.

I hope you get them back, man, and I feel your pain. It is not your fault that people are thieves. Best wishes.

Oh, man, very sorry to hear about that.

Just out of curiousity, what local police chief officially dislikes armed citizens? If you don't want to say, I'll understand.

I'm just referring to the traditional unfriendly attitude of the Sheriff and Police leadership who "officially" have to support infringements to make it through the political landscape here. My impression goes way back to the days of Tony Bouza - who wanted to license and register handguns and outlaw "assault weapons".

Point the detectives at any Anti- neighbors that get chatty about it. The other break-ins were cover.
Care to calculate the odds of such a crime happening on the ONE night you leave them in your car?
Ask your local law enforcement just how often that type of thing happens in your region, and factor that into the odds.
It STINKS.

I'm going to take a wild guess here: St. Louis Park?

P.S. Sorry about the loss of your rifles. I hope you recover them soon.

I would go to every pawn shop I find in the phone book and personaly tell them and leave S/n' and descriptions of the items with contact numbers for the investagating officer and for myself.

Sorry for your loss. Lets try not to be so hard on him. He does not need us to make it any worse.

good luck!

As one who has had a handgun stolen from a car, I can empathize. However, my loss was miniscule compared to yours.

What bothers me though is the fact that several contributors to this thread have blamed you, the innocent victim. It wasn't that many years ago when we, and most people we knew, would leave their homes unlocked, and their guns standing up behind the closet door.

Will the NRA insurance cover this? Assuming you're an NRA member that is. I thought you get $1k with a membership.

Sorry about your rifles.

This thread is a good warning to anyone that leaves thier stuff in the car. I sometimes leave my competition bag in the car overnight, but after this I will be bringing it in everynight.

ReadyontheRight,

My garage was burgalized a couple years ago. Nothing gun related was taken, but some very unique in irreplacable tools were. The cops told me that there are several gangs working in the mid west that will hit certain areas, then meat up with gangs from other areas and swap stollen merchandise. That way when the local LEO's bust 'em they don't have any recognizable stollen items on them.

Check with all the gun shops, pawn shops, and gun ranges in your state, and put adds in all the major newspapers in the surrounding states. A lot of trouble, but those guns are worth it.

Joe
