Not that this has anything to do with JFK but I remember going to the sporting goods department at Woolworth's in the North Miami 163rd Street Mall in around 1992-93 and they had a whole rack of M1's on the floor for $300 a piece. I was too stupid to know any better at the time and I remember thinking "who would want to spend $300 for a used rifle with numbers painted on the stock?"

Let me know when you get your time machine up and running.

I have often thought if JFK was running for office today , with the same viewpoints he spoke then, he would be reviled by the Democratic party as a right wing lunatic.

Not to try and turn this thread over to politics completely but ....

What Tokugawa said.

That sums up my view too; and one only need compare our nation then, as opposed to now. Hope that answers the raised eyebrow(s) over my post, and in keeping with my opening line here .... are my last words on that subject.

But darn my socks, I really would like to put a heavy bid on that rifle.

Reagan also closed the machine gun registry in 1986, banned importation of some foreign made assault weapons, and supported the Clinton AWB.
You're right. I guess I don't remember politics from my preschool years too well (I was 3 when the '86 GCA was made law). Time to hit the books.

Regarding the value of this rifle based on its provinence, I remember reading an article several (10-15) years ago about JFK's sailboat. As a teenager, he and his brothers were big sailors. They owned a Star class sailboat (about 21 ft long, currently used in the Olympics.) The boat was wood, and fell into serious disrepair over the years. A couple of investors bought it and paid over $50,000 because of the provinence. (As reference, a new, fully rigged, ready to race boat could have been bought at that time for under $30,000). The investors expected to spend well over $150,000 having it completely rebuilt (it was 75% dry-rotted and would not float) because they knew they could get paid taking it on the road and showing it off, plus the resale value would be astronomical.

Makes $100K for a rifle in 95% condition sound like chump change.

While the sale is interesting I think the actual .45 he carried or something similiar he had with him during the war would be much more valuable.

Since my first post was pulled because it said something snide about JFK's documented womanizing I'll try again. How many people know that when JFK was killed there were many people publicly cheered? Back then I couldn't understand it, now I do. I was in Germany at the time and they cried about it. But I later found out that in the states there were many people who didn't think it was that bad a thing. No flames, Just the way it was at the time. I was there and lived it. Joe Kennedy died in an aircraft explosion in WW II. He was flying an experimental explosive laden plane that was being tested as a remote flying bomb. The father, the senior Kennedy who was an ambassador to England, was suspected of being a Nazi spy and was sent back to the states. He also made his fortune rum running . So nothing is black and white, there's various shades of gray in all history, but time seems to smooth out the facts to what people want to believe.

I'd LOVE to own that rifle.
What a shame it would be if Ted and company cause the destruction of this firearm one day. I can't imagine having to turn in such a valuable piece for destruction because some politicos decide to make illegal that which has been a guaranteed right.

Ron James,
It's nice to see someone else who hasn't just drunken the koolaid given them by the media. I too got a post deleted, I pointed out that JFK made some big mistakes as a president (in fact one is considered to be one of the worst 10 presidential mistakes) But all that aside, if I was disgustingly rich, I'd buy it. I bet it's value will only go up from here.

When are they going to sell the Remington bolt action pistol that was fired by Jim Files from the grassy knoll?
We need a tinfoil hat smiley.
