I went to go help a buddy of mine reset a check engine light on his truck and while I was there we stopped in a local gun shop to see what they had for reloading supplies. I was skeptical because every local shop I have tried has had slim pickings. They had a fairly large stock of powder and bullets and had plenty of large pistol and rifle and some small pistol for $38/1000. I was more interested in powder and picked up a 4lb jug of Universal. I was overly excited as I didn't expect to find this. I was chatting with one of the employees about how this is possible and he said that the owner has connections! What the heck?

I stopped by my LGS yesterday and the shop was pretty well stocked with a decent assortment of powder and some primers. I picked up 1000 CCI large rifle primers and a pound of varget. The shop also had a good selection of hand guns and rifles -although no ARs, AKs or M1As. I talked with the owner and was told that more ammo and rifles are trickling in. The owner seemed to think that we were past "peak" at this point but the future really depended on what happens in DC the next month.

What I don't get is where they got all the supplies. Everyone else around here is out and as you all know there is almost nothing to be found online. What kind of connections could they possibly have?

I can't speak for all shops but can tell you how it worked when I had my shop. We had a large collection of distributors to deal with for guns and supplies. I gave a large volume of our business to a large distributor in the Mansfield, Ohio area about an hour south of us. Even when I could buy a gun for example a few buck cheaper elsewhere I was loyal to them. In return when things were scarce be it a new gun out or shooting supplies they were very good to us. So when scarce items trickled in we generally got first dibbs on hard to get items. Anyway, a local gun shop that deals on a regular basis with a large distributor can often get a good deal on things others may not. That just being my small personal experience.

Another real nice feature was they were close so I could avoid haz mat and shipping fees on large orders by going down and picking things up.

I have been shopping at the LGS since I moved to NC and after 5 years know most everyone in the store on a first name basis. I can still walk in there and get what I need, it may not be what I want but they don't forget 'how much business I have given them.

They treat me right when I need something, even with all panic buying going on.
It's a smaller shop and recent events have been hard on them, but they aparently also have been loyal to their distributors because they are still getting a trickle of components from somewhere.
Hope this end soon, I'm in good shape for a few years because of the inventory I keep at home but so many people that were reloading before the shortage hit are having such a hard time because of people hording supplies that will never use them.

I was on another forum with a specific target audience.
There was a thread about wait times for 30 round magazines from Brownells.
People who ordered 1-10 seem to be getting their orders faster than those who ordered 30,50 and even 100!!!!

I have no objection to people owning 100 large capacity magazines but when you buy them during a panic I then consider it hoarding or for resale.

Something else worth noting is those local gun shop owners will generally pass along those good deals to their loyal customers. A good friend of mine owns a local gun shop dating back to my gun shop days and I visit often. Jim gets some nice stuff, the sort of stuff that I like like the older S&W revolvers and older Colt 1911 guns. I buy a lot from Jim and in return he gives me good deals. Loyalty does indeed figure into things. All the way down the chain.

My younger brother has recently began setting up to load his own. Fortunately, I have plenty of supplies to share with him. The deal being when prices drop he can replace what I give him.
