Storage Question

I did a search on this but didn't find anything that answered my question. My son is in the Army (just back from Iraq) and is headed to Germany for 3 years. He left his rifle and two shotguns with me but I don't have room in my gun safe. I was considering storing them in a storage locker that I rent (it's secure enough) but wasn't sure about rust, etc. My thought was to put each long gun in a silicone-impregnated gun "sock" (like a Sack-up) and then lock each in a gun case. If I coated each with RIG beforehand, would this combination keep rust from forming? Thanks!

Is the locker temperature controlled? If not you are going to have wild swings in temperature which will create condensation on the metal. If you've got room somewhere in your house it might be better (you could just lock the bolts up in the safe to make them unusable if someone was to steal them.).

Greg: No, the locker is not temperature controlled. The summers here are 100+ and the winters in the 30's and 40's. However, the temp changes per day are pretty gradual. The article looks good; I'll give it a look.

I was in a very similar situation. I do trust what is mentioned in the article but I take an additional step. I seal them in bags designed for that purpose from brownells with some water absorbing crystals and the bag takes the o2 out of the bag. This way you don't have to worry about storing in a case as air is not circulating around it and the cases are usually airtight. (pelican)
