Hello All!

What does everyone think about gun socks for storage? I've been using them for a while, and they seem to be pretty good at preventing dings/rust. I've heard mixed things about silicone impregnated socks, especially with wood furniture, and I wanted to hear some more input to dispel the rumors. Thoughts?

I live in rainy Oregon and have used Bore-Stores for about 25years,all my rifles (except AR15) and pistols are in one. I think B-S is now out of business but Midway sells a thinner version which still works well. It might be over kill but since buying a safe I still keep the firearms in it in said socks.

At Walmart, buy some cheap thick socks from the men's department and a can of silicone spray from the automotive department. Turn the socks inside out and spray them with silicone. Turn them right side out and put your pistols in them.

You're welcome.

Silicone-impregnated anything is one of the best moisture repellants there is. I don't see what kind of damage it can do to wood furniture, if the wood finish is intact. It might feel a bit slick or greasy when you take the gun out, just wipe it down before use. There is a "conventional wisdom" not to store nice guns in their cases, due to moisture buildup, but I store several of my S&W revolver collectibles in their presentation cases, mainly for lack of room in my safe. I wrap the revolvers in silicone gun cloths before putting them in their cases, and they have had no negative outcomes. I keep a couple of old Russian rifles in gun socks. My safe does have humidity control, and the rest of my collection hangs free. I like the idea of soft socks impregnated with silicone spray, like Shawn suggests.

I have around 40 packs of guns socks so far. I forget the brand, but they were the highest rated ones on Amazon a few years back. I don't wish to make my own, partially due to laziness. What would be the best brand you can purchase? Or are all silicone impregnated socks about the same?

(This may have been mentioned before, but the only reason I stick to Amazon is my job hands out gift cards for them a ton each year. An insane amount, really)

Allen is made in America, to me that still means something.
But my 8in Anaconda doesn't fit in their socks, so I bought a bigger size but that brand is made in china.

I will check those out! I mostly have rifle length ones. I'll just pop the pistols in and wrap them up.

Almost all of my long guns and many of my handguns have been kept in socks, mostly Allen brand, for a long time. Never had any issues.

The only time I used them is when I had to stack rifles in a safe like cord wood. Solved that problem with additional safe. As for as rust goes, all ever use is a Golden Rod in the safe. It's not rocket science...

Ounce of prevention? I’m going with a pound. Guns coated with a rust preventer (Hornady one shot), in Allen silicone socks, golden rod heater, desiccant, and for the last ounce, some VCI tabs. My safe it’s on my basement and relative humidity can get pretty high. I have a humidistat in the safe, and even with the golden rod, the relative humidity gets a little too high. I haven’t figured out the balance with my HVAC yet between the main floor and the basement, but that would probably be the best pound of prevention.

About 10 years ago, my area recorded the highest dew point on earth at that moment in time. It can get steamy.

That said, my guns are doing fine. Maybe the gun socks are the reason? I don’t know.

I use them in all my long guns. It is my insurance to keep them from getting scratched in the safe plus the rust. If you are like most of us you know that we never have enough safes for our firearms. My wife says that if I want another safe I need to buy a bigger house..............................still thinking!!!!!

I wish I had room for another/bigger safe. I don't even have an outlet remotely close to the safe, so a Golden Rod is out of the question unless they make battery powerd ones.

I used old hiking socks for my hand guns that i sprayed with silicone many years. That worked well, especially so when i had them stored in a pile in a drawer. But i mostly stopped using them when i bought a large gun safe. I still use commercials rifle socks (sprayed with silicone) to avoid nicks and handling dings in the safe.
