I don't have a gun safe yet, so what's the best way to store my rifles? Keep in mind, they'd be kept this way ~6 months before they were taken out and re-oiled and wiped down.

- Uncovered in a closet leaning against a wall?
- In a soft gun case?
- In a hard gun case with foam packing?

Moisture is death to firearms, and lack is not so great too.
A soft gun case, unless it is nasty with oil can wick away the oil and help it rust,
same for the foam, except it too can can degrade into a nasty sticky slime..

Open air, in an ok environment can be best.

Really the best bet is to put a storage compound like easy OX or cosmoline,
Another option is gun socks with silicone.

Of course it depends on where you live, and the relative humidity / salt sea air in your home.

But with that said, I have seen far more guns ruined in a closet inside a gun case or holster then I have seen left standing in the open where air can circulate around them.

A damp gun case is just a commercial rust testing chamber in disguise.

If I were to cover them with anything, it would be with one of the thin silicone impregnated gun socks so they can breath & not have moisture held against them 24/7..
