Storing and Organizing Pistol Magazines

Anyone have any good ideas for storing and organizing pistol magazines?

I've used CED magazine storage pouches in the past. I think a larger plastic worm or tackle organizer box would work well.

Anyone have any good ideas?

I own Glocks in several calibers and it can be hard to tell them apart at a glance. I use a silver Sharpie to mark caliber and to number them to identify which one may be malfunctioning. It worked so well I did the same thing to all of my magazines as well. Not directly answering your question but I think it is a good idea.

7 double stack pockets, room for 2 pieces, 2 extra storage pouches.

I can fit 25 or so P229 magazines, and 39 or so 1911 magazines in one.

I have 15 or 16 of them, plus several of the i-shot 6 pocket magazine pouches. Each is dedicated to a pair or more of the same autopistol or variation thereof that uses the same magazines - except each 1911 has its own range rug...don't ask me why...dunno...

I use the extra deep Plano tackle boxes for my mags. I use the non-divided ones for my NIB mags and the divided ones for my loose mags. They will handle numerous mags and stack well in the gun safe. I tried the mag pouch route, but was constantly opening them to see what was what. I do use the pouches for range time though.

The individual Plano type tackle or utility boxes are what I am considering. I would like to find one that has, say, six compartments or dividers just the right size for individual magazines. One tackle box for each pistol.

Don't laugh, but i was thinking about getting one of those over the door cloth shoe racks. Twelve or sixteen pockets on the inside of the safe door should hold all the mags plus small accessories and holsters. I think each pocket will hold about six dbl stack mags.

I'm working on a design for a small range bag. Zippered, opens like a book, handle on the spine. Gun rug and a box of ammo on one side, 4 clip tubes and another ammo box on the other.

I'll need dozens of them... all sizes.

I use the SPUD6 as my handgun ammo and mag storage case. It's very heavy plastic with an o-ring seal and I toss in some desicant. There's a removable tray where I keep all the mags. Each mag is labled with my initials and a identifying number so I can keep track of problems. Right now I have about 18 G23 mags, 4 CZ-40P mags, 3 S&W 4014 mags, 7 Beretta 85 mags and (I think) 3 Bersa 644 mags in the removable try. All are loaded and all fit nicely. There might be two mags that are laying on top of the others, the rest fit nicely in the tray.

This way I have the ammo and loaded mags in the same place. They are sealed and dry and the case is lockable.

I use a different SPUD6 for my range box for transport and a SPUD7 for rifle ammo and mags. The removable trays fit both the SPUD6 and SPUD7 so when I go to the range I pop the tray out of the ammo/mag storage box and drop it in the range box. Then, off I go.

For home reasons I need to keep my mags in a relatively full safe along with the firearms so my recent solution was to buy a few magnetic "tool" strips at Sears and hang them (the magnetic strips) longwise on hooks that are on the inside of the door. The mags are held securely that way and I can see all of them at once and grab the ones I need. You can stack a lot of mags side by side along the strips from top to bottom.

Pistol mags go in quart size Zip-Loc bags - one bag for 1991 mags, one for XD-40s, one for S&W 39s, etc. Six or eight mags easily fit in each bag. All the bags go into Wally-World plastic bins with covers.

I have enough rifle mags, and they take up enough room, that each type gets its own bin with no need to separate them in bags.

I bought some heavy felt type fabric and made my own pouch storage. I cut lengths long enough for as many mags of one type as I wanted and sewed another strip on top to make the pouches. Some hold four mags while others hold up to twelve. It makes them easy to carry to the range, easy to store and protects the finish.

You need to go to the sporting goods store and look at them. They make fairly large tackle boxes with adjustable shelves and inserts. I have one that isn't too obscenely large, and it holds over 50 handgun magazines and lots of other stuff like slings and spare parts. It is about 2'x2'x3'.

Tupperware. For long-term storage, you can even drop in a pack of dessicant.

For larger collections, use those plastic tubs you use for storing clothing. You can see what's inside and it is easy to get to them.
