Storing firearms while in college

Well, it's in the same state, just different college. But I suppose that since you'd be considered a resident of that state, it's then by extension the county?

A few things to consider:

1. What state and why would a different county matter?

2. ID requirements. FFLs require a government issued identification to prove your state of residency. Just because the Federal law says that you are a resident of the state you are going to college in does not mean that you will have sufficient identification to prove it to an FFL to buy firearms. If you can get a state issued identification card while you are in college you should be good to go at an FFL.

3. Private, face to face sales usually (depending on state) have no such identification requirements. If you can find a private seller that knows the definition of state of residency in the Federal laws, it would be easier to buy from them.

4. Obtaining a CCW permit. Again, just because the Federal law says you are a resident does not mean that the issuing agency for CCW permits will consider you a resident. Again, ID plays a big part in that as well. Some state issue CCW permits to non-residents, so you would definitely be good with those, but states who issue only to residents may not issue to you as a college student from another state.

Even though it is wrong, not all states will follow the allowances made in Federal law.

At the moment, I live in the communist wart of New York known as "New York City". In NYC, you're required to be 21 to own a musket ffs since even blackpowder weapons have to be registered under your gun licenses.

But, see, I didn't apply to any CUNY. The only colleges I'll be going to are in Long Island. That's why I'm asking, so I can know whether I can just buy a gun w/o any unit and rent a storage unit without any issues.

There are many individuals that are NYC residents that buy and maintain rifles and shotguns outside of the City (ie. have a legal residence in the City, buy rifle/shotgun outside the city, keep it at the vacation property upstate) and thus legally avoid meeting NYC posession requirements by not bringing the firearm into the city.

As long as you have whatever NY state permits are required for the handguns, you should not have any problems at all. There are no state permits required for shotguns/rifles. You just can't take them back to NYC with you.
