I'm looking to store some of my collection long term is there any good source of info out there to assist me in my quest. Also are there any methods that anybody has used that have worked in the past?

Never had to do this personally, but I have heard of others doing it occasionally.

A lot of people leave th guns with a trustworthy friend.
Another option is storing them with an FFL.

I think either of those options are superior to renting a U-Store-It type of facility.

I'm looking to store them at a cabin that I own. I'm doing this inorder to safe guard them while I'm not in residence. :)

In this case hidden & secure is more valuable than obviously secure. If the floor isn't carpeted you could cut/remove the floorboards to have access to the joists underneath (under the couch perhaps?). You could then secure them to the joists (eye bolt through the joist, chained/padlocked to the eye bolt). I'm assuming that we aren't talking about a large amount of firearms but rather a couple to have around there for SD/plinking/hunting.

Maybe a false wall in the back of a closet with the firearms secured to a stud. If the hvac won't be running while the cabin is empty (if you even have such a thing there :D ), you could slip them into the ductwork if it isn't a big pain to get into it.

Hidden in plain sight is probably the best (in places where people wouldn't think to look) rather than a big lock box out where everyone who comes in can see it.

This is also working off the assumption that you won't tell/let anyone else see you secure/retreive your firearms. If someone sees you do it & knows that the place will be empty for a while then it wouldn't be too hard to break in & get them.

Food for thought anyway.

You mean something like remove the wood stocks, coat the metal in RIG grease, wrap in plastic, put it all in a big plastic pipe with the end caps glued on and bury them?

One of my friends has a closet that he puts his guns in. He Just took off the door and put in a fake wall. I think it would be neat to build a tornado room and just put on a safe door.

I won't be using the cabin with any regularity except during the White Fish run and hunting season. I'm looking to store defensive/hunting weapons in a retreat /vacation setting. Fire has never been a big issue in my area like it is in the western states. I do have a sealed crawl space under the cabin (concrete lined) Also what would I have to do special to store ammo in the same situation?

That's even easier, just bolt an ammo can to the joist (still assuming that nobody has seen you carve a hole into the floor).

With the sealed crawl space I think that the hidden access to it with the firearms bolted to a joist is probably your best bet. Don't leave anything out in the open that might suggest that you have guns around there. Or if that isn't possible get a $50 M/N wall hanger to satisfy the casual thief from looking too much further (perhaps with the bolt removed but stored closeby (visible) to make him think that that is all that you have there).

If you do have access to the crawlspace then make your hidden door at the other side of the cabin. It would take an ambitious thief to crawl all the way under there if there is nothing visible from the access point.

Another idea depending on how often you are going to check on them, is bury them in a pvc pipe, and then put another on the outside with the firearms sealed and the ammo with them.

Look on any of the survival sites on how to do this.

I've seen them hiden in the furniture at a hunting camp. Carefully remove the fabric from the back of the sofa, place the guns inside and put the fabric back in place. Once the sofa in back against the wall you cannot tell there is anythng inside - even when you sit on it.

My friends dad simply keeps a couple of shotguns under the cushions or sometimes under the sofa.

The guns stored this way are not collectable or irreplaceable - just good shooters.

coffee table

I once had a coffee table that was designed to store three long guns side by side. It had a hidden release and a spring loaded lid it was good for the short term but not what I'd use for between season storage. I'm leaning towards the use of storage behind the floor studs mentioned a few responses ago. Thanks for the suggestion though.:)

Invest in a safe. With no one being in this cabin for long periods of time gives anyone the chance to sneak in and make themselves home. During this time they can go thru just about everything.
