Storing Gun in Sheepskin question

Recently I acquired a 150 year old percussion pistol that came with an old sheepskin homemade storage case having leather outside and fur inside. I know storing a gun in contact with leather is bad but the pistol is in outstanding condition. I am wondering if the oils in the fur have helped in protecting it all these years. TIA

Sheep wool contains Lanolin, which in itself is a pretty darn good waterproofing, and would certainly keep the wool from holding moisture.

For that reason, sheepskin lined gun cases were used for many many years on the most expensive gun cases, until real sheepskin became too expensive and scarce.
