I have a Dan Wesson Bobtail with an external extractor. I sent it to DW to have it checked and brought back to spec. They replaced the extractor, firing pin stop and barrel bushing. They also cleaned up the sear and disconnect and adjusted the trigger. I've put about 350 rounds through it since it's been back. I went to the range today and shot 200 rounds. Of those 200 rounds, 2 empty shells stuck it the port, parallel to the slide. Just like you opened the slide and dropped an empty into it long ways.

Half the rounds were shot with 2, 8 round Wilson mags, the other half shot with 2 Kimber tac-mags 7 round. Each time this FTE/stovepipe happened, it was with the Wilson mags. I was shooting Blazer brass 230.

Could the mag be causing this? It seems just opening the slide a little for the empty to drop out and releasing the slide does chamber another round. I shot about 20 rounds of Gold Dot and did not experience this problem. I don't believe I was limp wristing it and the gun was cleaned and lubed before shooting.

Thanks for any pointers.

I believe the mags can cause this if they lose control of the top round and it knocks the empty up enough to miss the ejector as the slide moves back. If its always case base to the breech face and case mouth mangled by the barrel hood, good chance this is what is going on.

Sometimes a stronger mags spring helps or bending the mag feed lips to delay (move forward) the cartridge release point will do the trick, but other than that either junk the mags or confine them to another gun if they work there. If moving the mags to another gun moves the problem along with them you have you answer as to the cause for sure.

Thanks for the reply. I wouldn't have figured that with Wilson mags but I have read where others had had issues in other guns. The Kimber tac-mags seem to function good. The do appear to have stronger springs, judging by the tension applied to insert rounds in them.

And that is what it's doing, case bace to breach end and mouth mangled by barrel hood.
