Hello i bought a remington 870 parkerized police shotgun w/ ws rear sights, xs fronts sights, pistol grip and r3 pad. I notice when i till the gun up or down it sounds like there is a loose rod sliding up and down in side of the stock. I removed the r3 pad and found a metal cylinder with a screw on it but there was no loose article inside the stock. Does anyone know what this sliding sound is? And what exactly is this cylinder inside the stock?

Thanks

edit: I have not fired this gun yet and the title should be 870 .

If the sliding sound is coming from the magazine, it is probably a "plug". This is a stick of some sort which is used to reduce the capacity of the magazine. Generally that is only necessary for hunting of migratory birds, so you should be able to take it out unless you're planning to do some duck (or similar type) hunting with it.

The metal cylinder in the buttstock is probably a recoil reducer of some kind. It should not be sliding around. Stuff papers or rags in there to wedge it firmly in place in the forward most position.

Usually the sliding/rattling sound is the small "star" washer on the stock bolt.

Remington puts a small washer on the bolt of the synthetic stocked guns to prevent the bigger washers from falling off during assembly.
Sometimes the star washer is loose on the bolt and slides up and down.

To fix it, remove the small washer from the stock bolt, lay it on a bench block and tap the washer with the ball end of a small ball peen hammer to close it slightly. Not a lot of force is needed, just a couple of taps.

I have no idea what kind of metal cylinder with a screw you're seeing. Are you sure it's not the stock bolt and the flange it seats on?

Picture??

Ditto!!! I removed one from my daughters 870 because the sound annoyed me. It really doesn't hurt anything though.
