A while back I saw a company selling AR15s with fixed magazines and modified receivers allowing them to be loaded with stripper clips, without the need to open the receiver. Does anyone have a link or picture?

I was thinking a pistol version of this (with a ten round mag) would bypass the DC 'bottom loading guns are machineguns' law...

I believe you're talking about the FAB-10. It was conceived to be California compliant for the AR-15 style rifle. FAB-10

Hope this helps.

Nope, this could be fed by a stripper clip without breaking the rifle apart. It was sporterised too, with a lightweight handguard, free-floating barrel and target sights. It was coloured, not black.

So it had a hole cut through the bolt and through the top of the receiver? I suppose it could have locked open but the distance from the top of the receiver to the top of the magazine would be nearly impossible to load properly. Sounds like a rumor to me.

Nah I saw pictures. I don't pretend to know how it worked, but it was definitely real ;) I say it was an AR, it may well have had a very different action, but it was advertised as a Cali-legal AR and looked like a sporterised AR with a hole cut in the top..
