Looking for a stun gun for the Mrs, per her request, for those times when she can't carry one of her favorite firearms. Looking for something fairly small, ergonically designed to allow a solid grip, with sufficient power that does not require charging time (or in other words, can provide a sustained charge versus a quick discharging burst). Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks,
rt

Taser's the only one that works.

The rest are worse than useless. You'd be better of with OC spray, a knife, or baton, instead of any other 'stungun'.

Start by looking into the local legality. They're not legal everywhere. Then tell her to buy a small can of hairspray. It's got lacqeur in it and nobody questions it.

A few things to think about...

Are we talking contact-stun, where you must physically drive the stun devide into the perp? Getting that close to someone is not usually a good idea, and I'd much rather be heading the OTHER way...

It is a momentary device. Easily recovered from, especially if it enrages the perp. I've seen me recover instantly from a Taser hit.

Will this be constantly carried in your hand? Will you have a stun device holster? Digging around in a purse, pocket, glove compartment, console, etc. isn't an option when you NEED it.

A lot of people forget to check the batteries/function. It is left in the trunk, glove compartment, nightstand drawer, etc. Batteries dead, corrosion on circuits, etc.

As the man said, the Taser is the only real option out there. Separation of perp/victim, prolonged incapacitation, My last instructor said the civilian model discharges for a minimum of 30 seconds. It is meant to be left on scene while you didi mau. The Taser discharges confetti-like paper with the probes; the confetti is printed with the cartridge's ID number (registered to buyer).

However, just as with any other projectile-firing device, you'll probably be concerned about civil liability for putting a probe in someone's eye, etc. Ridiculous as it is, it's still a consideration.

OC spray is slow to take effect. Not good when the assailant is actively attacking; worse if wielding a weapon of any sort. Yet, when it does take effect, it can be very debilitating. And it lasts a while. They tried a few different types on us'n cadets. The stuff I got felt like I had individual sand grains between my eyes and eyelids. Nasty.

It easily affects those in the immediate area, too. You should have seen the faces when a fellow officer started shaking his spray (mostly for effect) in a building stairwell. The resisting subject immediately gave up, but we later discussed the effect of pepper spray in a confined area. Not good. We have had some interesting cases where the wind was a factor. Also a few incidents where citizens used it to effect. I do like the needle adapter that pierces auto door weatherstripping...

It must be aimed; pattern depends on the model. Practice makes perfect, and most people don't test their units, let alone practice. Spray 'n pray isn't reliable on firearms, nor is it in pepper. If you carry it, buy one for practice and one for use (test the use one at least once or twice).

Pros and cons for the different types; spray, foam, etc.

Pepper spray?

I have been eating hot peppers all of my life, I am 43 now. Plenty of times I get the stuff in my face, jalapeno, serrano, scotch bonnet, etc.:fire: (messy eater) Other than a brief irritant to the eyes the stuff (pepper spray) is just real hot to me, nothing more. I'm just an average everyday guy, so I would think it to be safe to assume there are others out there pretty immune to the OC spray as well, not to mention wacked out drug influenced scum. Personally I would look for something else.

ps

I forgot one thing my nephew and friends stun each other all the time and it has little effect on them. (900000 volt Scorpion) As for the Taser I can't speak, though I have witnesssed it in use first hand by a LEO with devastating results.

You might want to try Fox brand pepper spray or the new long range DPS pepper spray from <selfdefenseproducts.com>. The DPS has a range of 17 to 20 feet, about 30% longer than other sprays. Fox is a classic and it usually causes people to "freeze" on the spot. There are exceptions to the rule just as there are with pistol rounds. You have to buy the best SD ammo and hope for the best.
The kubotan works well IF you can get some training with it.

I prefer the Taser - more intimidation factor, you're not at the mercy of the elements (rain / wind) and IMO, it's more effective!
