Subgauge Mania

My search for a subgauge gun ended in a spectacular fashion this weekend when a Winchester 101 skeet set came up for grabs with a 20, 28 and .410 barrel set. The metal is excellent, the wood is very good with a couple of minor dings in the finish and the price was right. The barrels are 28" with fixed skeet chokes. I shoot most of the games with a 12 gauge but wanted something smaller to fool around with on those days when I want to shoot something different. And at 6lbs, 10 ounces it would make an acceptable gun for upland game if my sxs gave out. Anyone have any experience with the 101s, any insights to share? The gun did not come with a proper case and if anyone knows where I could find a Winchester three barrel set case or something similar I'd be very grateful for a PM.

WOW!!!!! The 101 is a darn solid shotgun, will outlast 3 serious shooters lives with a tuneup now and then. Don't know where to get a case but something like that could probably be found on ebay.......

Look to Nasco and also Americase. They are the ones that most skeet shooters have their tube sets in as well as their 3 barrel sets that I have seen.

Congrats on a super gun set up. Should last longer than any three shooters.

Paul, congrats and Mazeltov. Now keep your eyes open for a matched set of MECs(G)...

The 101 has a good rep. I'd call it as good or better than a Citori.

Dave: I have a 20 gauge Citori (soon to go on the block to cover the Winchester) and they are very similar guns. The 101 is somewhat older and where the Citori has impressed checkering, the Winchester is hand cut.
I'd give the nod to the 101 for better trigger pulls and mechanical triggers but upon inspecting both very closely it's a dead heat otherwise.

A matched set of MECs isn't in the future just yet. Challenger makes pretty good subgauge ammo at reasonable prices and friends who do load .410 ammo call it a very frustrating experience trying to feed the little wads into the hulls.

Thanks for that, someone else just asked about a 101 and I'd not enough input on them from the cognizant.

Heard the same thing about 410s. One source says the only reason he puts up with the hassle is the cost of factory stuff.

How(Rhetorical query) can the ammo makers charge more for less shot and powder?
