Like some, I'm after hotter rounds that give the 38 Special more oomph than standard factory ammo. You basically have 3 choices in this arena: Handloading, Buffalo Bore and Doubletap.

I first discovered Doubletap awhile back. I was amazed at the velocity for his 38 Special's. But one thing kept nagging me: The recoil felt the same as most standard factory loads. Common sense tells us you need more powder for faster velocity (usually) = more recoil.

After wondering for awhile, I finally had a trusted friend with 35+ years of experience in handloading do a chronograph test for me. 5 bullets of 5 different lots each (25 bullets total for each load) were all tested. Here are the results:

All testing was done with a S&W Model 60 3 inch.

Doubletap Ammunition
125g Speer Gold Dot LV +P

Claimed Velocity (from Website): Velocity: 1175fps / 4" Ruger GP-100
1.875" bbl S&W - 1100fps

Actual Results:

987fps, 26SD, 87 ES Average (no tested rounds over 1000fps)
Result: MAJOR FAIL - Not anywhere near claimed velocity, wide spread

Buffalo Bore Ammunition
125g Speer Gold Dot LV +P

Claimed Velocity (from Website): 3 inch—1180 fps

Actual Results:

1,228fps, 11SD, 28ES Average
Result: MAJOR PASS - As advertised, infact, even faster, very accurate

Buffalo Bore Ammunition
158g Soft Cast Keith-Style Lead HP +P

Claimed Velcity (from Website): 3 inch—1143 fps

Actual Results:
1,161fps, 13SD, 42ES Average
Result: MAJOR PASS - As advertised, infact, even faster

As you can see from the testing, and corroborated by another poster's previous chronograph results of Doubletap Ammo (search forums), Doubletap is infact claiming velocities that are not delivered. While there is variations in different weapons and barrel lengths, a variation as wide as almost 120fps+ obviously shows false claims. Many posters here and elsewhere have been suspicous of the claims of Doubletap, and apparently rightly so. Mike Mcnett no longer answers emails or even postal letters, including those asking for comment about the results. Tim Sundles of Buffalo Bore always answeres questions via email, and stands behind his product, and based on unbiased testing done here, is selling a genuine product. Case measurements done also show that Tim's brass is the most uniform.

I would suggest those of you who bought your 38 Special's from Doubletap to ask for a refund as you obviously aren't getting what you were told you were getting.

However, the Doubletap ammunition is very attractively priced, and may do well for several reasons, such as stockpiling or low-priced practice with premium bullets.

I post this as an answer to any of you who have had the same questions I have, and likewise, if any of you have some, feel free to ask.

I can't comment on double tap, but we tested Buffalo Bore's .38+P ammo and velocity did in fact exceed their claim. Visit www.brassfetcher.com and click on .38 special. As I recall their 125 gr. from a 4 inch s & w was almost 1300 fps. That's very close to a .357.

I'd rather pay for a box of 50, use 30 for practice, and place the bullets where they count.

a few hundred fps doesn't make up for bad shooting.

I shot the 158gr BB in my Smith 19 and the recoil was worse than the .357s I sometimes shoot.
I personally don't think the bullet is going to be more effective if pushed to that velocity, and may even perform worse.
I shot Golden Sabre 124gr in my 642 and they were horrible. Looked like a photographer's flash going off. The Gold Dot SB loads worked much better.

I'm not sure if their .357's are any different, better or worse. Suppose those need to be chrono'd next.

Anyone want to send me some?

Very interesting. I've shot some Doubletap full-house 357 125s and they FELT hot as hell, and did massive damage to some bowling balls. However, they grouped around 5" at 25 yards, when the gun was clearly capable of more. Gun was a New Vaquero 357 with a 4.68" barrel, and grouped 2" with Speer factory 135gr 357 "Short Barrel" ammo (which is much milder). Shooting was off bags so I don't think recoil alone affected results.

I dearly want to try some BuffBore ammo in this gun - full house 125gr and 158gr JHP.

Double Tap's "claimed" energy/velocity figures have always been questionable to me. There are numerous threads on Glocktalk supporting this.

Too many people enter into threads boasting about dt's astonishing velocities and how much more powerful it is than 'big 3' ammo manufacturer's stuff is. Even dt's terminal ballistic claims are suspect as well. No where does it say that they use calibrated ballistic gel. Yes, that does make a difference.

Double Tap's customer service is lacking as well....

Don't hang your hat on these over-inflated velocity/energy figures, or use that as a main reason for buying the stuff [which i suspect it IS for many of you]

thanks for sharing!

You usually dont getsomething for nothing, and velocity is directly related to pressure.

I would love for someone to test those 1300 fps +p .38 spl loads, I wonder how far over SAAMI + 10% they are.

I should mention none of the rounds showed signs of any excess pressure or bulging, all rounds easily ejected, and were checked afterwards.

I've shot over 5k rds. of DT since the first week they opened their doors for business. 10mm is the only caliber I buy from them. Everything else is Speer. There are no viable options in 10mm using an autoloader (other than BB which is over twice the price). I can easily surpass the power of my 610 with my 629 using any other factory loaded ammo. My carry guns get nothing but Speer loaded gold dots. DT's velocity #'s have been challenged for years and I tend to agree they are for the most part on most days overinflated.

If my 180 gold dots are only doing 1250 from my Delta Elite instead of 1300, I still feel I'm getting my moneys worth. I would'nt buy DT 9mm to get 15-50 fps over Speer loaded GD's.

Let me start by saying this "test" was in no way scientific! I was my local range last fall and I used one of my fellow club members chrono. He was shooting some new handloads and I asked him if he minded if I try my new ammo. I did not ask if had calibrated is chrono that am! I shot a cylinder of DT 125gr .357's. IIRC the average of 6 shots from my 2.75" ruger six was ~1550fps.

If you want to practice pretty cheaply with premium bullets, Georgia Arms is great. Their reloaded brass 9mm Gold Dots are very attractively priced, and even their new loaded Gold Dots are a good deal. And I don't think they make any outrageous claims either.

I dunno where you guys are getting that DT's customer service is lacking. On two occasions I have have e-mailed Mr McNett, and each time I had a reply within an hour and a half that answered my question directly, and invited me to call him to discuss and more questions I might have.

Edit to add: I do carry DT .357s in my SP101, but am not some loyalist to them. Just making a point about the CS.

Astounding velocity from the BB 158gr. That has to be nipping the heels, if not overlapping, most factory .357 158gr from a 3" barrel. With numbers like that it is no surprise the load is still a top choice.

This thread has me wondering now! I just got a new chrono for my B-day and plan of testing DT .38, .357 (125,158 and 180gr) and .40 (155, 165, 180 AND 200gr) and .45 230gr. When I get some data, I will post it!

.357 Mag Buffalo Bore 180 Grain

Here were my results that I posted before:

Buffalo Bore 180 Grain .357 Mag

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I always wondered if Buffalo Bore ammo would live up to those velocities they have on their website. So with new chrono in hand I went to the range and shot a few to check the velocities in a 20" Henry Big Boy. Below are the results:

Shot Velocity
1 1912
2 1888
3 1904
4 1921
5 1910

Avg 1907
SD 12

They performed as advertised. I was very pleased with the results.

Buffalo Bore is what I use for carry in my snubbies,38spl is 158gr lswc hp +p
357 is 158gr short barrel low flash tactical the bullet is a gold dot.
My lady shoots 158 gr.lswc hp standard from BB and its actually closer to + p
velocity and standard pressure.BB ammo is very good, and the figures are the results of actual off the shelf stock hand guns.I recomend anyone to give them a try. This is the only store bought ammo I use, every thing else is hand loaded.Just My 2 cents.
