Disclaimer: Before I started this thread, I did a search and many threads became closed or ended up with arguments between posters. So please, no fighting on this thread.
I am just trying to help other reloaders find usable powder substitutes since availability of certain popular powders are still tight. Also, some other less popular powders are lower priced - this will help to lower the reloading cost overall.
Many of us here (myself included) recommend Winchester 231 as a flexible pistol powder that can be loaded for many calibers. But availability has been tight. Brad from Missouri Bullets gave us a heads up that Graf & Sons got a large shipment of Hodgdon powder, but they are already down to the last 8# jug of HP38 (same powder as W231).
Can we post substitute powder options that are same or very close so if a particular powder sought is out of stock, another close or similar powder can be considered and your comparison experience? (Warning: Be sure to use the correct load data for the substitute powder(s)!).
TIA
I will start with my favorite go-to powder Winchester 231 (same powder as Hodgdon HP38). zxcvbob posted Alliant Green Dot as a substitute. I did a quick check of the load data and it looks very good. I have not used Green Dot and could someone comment on its performance?
