Since Tannerite seems to be 4 items (2 in each item to be mixed when ready to use), is there a cheaper way to make a legal substance on par with this stuff?

I just bought a 1/2lb bottle and will be taking it out sometime. I don't think I will be shooting it this summer though because its really dry here and I am not about to be that guy.

There are probably many, but for most of us--myself included--making impact explosives may be illegal and at least hazardous. I did more than my share as a kid, and I always like to read up on things still---but I like my hands and fingers attached.

There is a very good and serious chemistry/explosive forum that might have answers:

They have extensive resources and formulary. They don't suffer fools from what I've seen.

Mega and NBK aren't exactly legal users of chemical knowledge. Do watch the laws when you go to use any information from RogueSci.

if your a good shot you can clamp some empty shotgun hulls with live primers to a 2x4 and try to pick them off with a .22

just be sure to secure the shells good so they dont go flying backwards.

And I'd add to PTK's warning---they can be very arrogant and heavy handed.
Good material--some horrible personalities and ego trips.

How about vinegar and baking soda in a 2 litre bottle? If you hit it while it's upright with a .22, the pressure will force it to (in effect) circumcise itself and blow it's top 'cone' off. You could do that with dry ice, too----but THAT gets a bit risky. I don't know that it would be illegal, but you'd really have to watch it. The pressure can build up pretty quick once the top is on. Dry ice is available at some walmarts and ice cream chain stores ('33' flavors). Watch your eyes (goggles) and Don't use glass or very hard plastic.

Search the net and you'll find recipes for homemade binary explosives. Tannerite is basically {redacted by moderator} with a dash of Tabasco and a pinch of salt thrown in for seasoning. Fun stuff. :)

There was an ingredient list floating around a while back, make your own. A lot of {redacted by moderator}, IIRC.

Once Tannerite is mixed it may not be transported or stored legally without a BATFE high-explosives license and approved storage facility.

Laws, laws, and more laws! Is it still legal for me to piss upright? Or for that matter piss at all? Sooner or later they are going to take away our frickin thoughts!

The messed up thing is they want to keep people from building bombs that take lives for terror, but the damn TV tells the whole world how to make bombs and even how nuclear fusion is obtained. Like a frickin video recipe book!!

I believe Tannerite is considered kin to "flashpowders" such as the powder used in military artillery simulators (M-80s and the like) and counts as a high-explosive.

The BATFE doesn't have to allow Tannerite to be sold as a two part system ready to mix and shoot to blow it up. They could easily say that since it can be mixed and stored there is intent to store high-explosives illegally.

I'd advise against this! When I was a kid my friend's uncle suggested we try this. Well I hit the shell, but it did not explode, instead the primer cup came flying back striking the uncle in the upper lip. Bleed like a MF and he was the only one who stayed really calm on the way to the ER.

I've never blindly accepted the advice or information from someone again.

THR will not be used to exchange information concerning explosives.

There's many sources of such information, THR need not be one of them.

Kindly restrict your comments to non explosive reactive targets.

try to use old jugs full of water...sometimes with a little latex paint (or miracle grow) so you can see the water level. I've been known to use a sharpie and mark 1 through 10 with a little line on the bottles, with 10 being closest to the bottom. They can also be hung from trees if they're milk jugs. Kinda like an easter egg hunt for teenagers with .22's.

Balloons?

I've seen Tom Knapp shoot aspirin with his .22 before...

Nothing really compares to blowing something up I suppose, but I'm pretty sure that if my targets start costing more than the ammo to shoot them then something has gone seriously wrong.

I had an interesting conversation with a couple of bomb techs at Gunsite last month.

Trust me when I say that after hearing their stories, I don't ever want to mess around with any home-brewed explosives.

"Yep, I saved some money by making my own. Sure wish I had my hands back, though."

I remember it was on the news a year or two ago that a local guy near where I lived was seriously injured and his house badly damaged, trying to make homemade "exploding targets".

I was curious what exploding targets were and found out about Tannerite, then I found out that it was made just a couple of miles down the road from where I lived at the time! Several guys at work and I split a case and I have to say it was impressive! Not being a chemist, I would not even remotely be interested in trying to make my own, out of concern for both safety and legality.

Anyone that wants the recipe for tannerite can do a google for it. GWA45 may be surprised where one of the top links for it is.
