Well, this year's deer season is over. After taking a doe during archery season, I set out during the gun season to take a deer (doe or buck) with my Remington 700 SPS. It's a heavy rifle that I've only used for target shooting up until this season. After 8 years or so, I figured it was time to try to get a deer with it. And on my second hunt with it, a small buck, maybe a 5) stepped out, trotted down my trail, and ducked back into the woods. There was a second one behind him still in the brush, so I let the small 5 point pass, hoping a bigger boy was behind him.

Unfortunately, it was just a spike but still a healthy sized deer for eastern NC. Knowing from past mistakes not to be greedy for antler size when it comes to filling the freezer, I put a 150 grain Hornady Interlock through this guy at about 40 yards just as he was across the trail and about to go back into the thick stuff. Needless to say, 47 grains of CFE223 was more than enough. He actually ran at me for a bit, but I could tell by his stride that he was hit hard.

I chambered a second round from my stand, but before I could get my scope back on him, he was in the brush. I was then pretty sure I heard him fall a few seconds later. After waiting a bit, I climbed down, found a very good blood trail and found him about 15 yards into the brush.

I was more than happy with him and the fact that I now had a deer to claim for this rifle, but the rest of my season was absolute boredom with not another shootable deer giving me a chance...... You win some, you lose some

Well done! That one is going to be some very good eating. Our season in Missouri has one more day to go. I took a small 8 point on opening day in November, now I'm trying to fill a doe tag with my Hawken. I will be happy to harvest a doe that size when I go out for the final hunt tomorrow afternoon. Here's hoping..!
