suggest new grips for blue 1911

Suggestions for grips for a blued, plain jane Colt 1911. Range gun; sometimes wears a Marvel .22 upper.

I tend to prefer "classy" rather than tacti-cool or high-tech looks.

Who makes nice wood grips for 1911s? I just put some Nills on my SIG 232 and love them, but I'd like to avoid another $99 price tag for grips

Trying to picture whether darker or lighter color woods would look better on a blued pistol.

Grip feel is as important as looks. I have large-ish hands with long-ish thin-ish fingers.

Pics would be great if you got 'em.

No pix of my Taurus PT1911, but I like the lighter colored grips on a blued gun. I got a set from Esmaralda (similar to the one on the far left of cmidkiff's post) and I am very happy with them.

+2 on the Esmeraldas. I've got her grips on my High Powers and they not only look good, but the fit on them is excellent (better than the factory grips, actually . . .).

I'd look into Ahrends.

I went through Top Gun Supply, and was able to work with them (who in turn worked with the people at Ahrends) to get the type of wood I wanted for my former Colt. These are in Moradillo (sp?) - the attempt was to get a classic look for them:

Go to eBay and type in "burl 1911 grips" and be stunned at what you can get for $20-40.

The Ahrends and Esmeraldas are nice, but out of my budget right now.

In addition to wood double diamonds, I have run plain ivories, Spegels, and Colt pewters from the 1980s.

They all look pretty good to me.

Try www.hogueauction.com - they have factory 2nds where most of the time you can't find the flaw. Hogue makes some beautiful wood grips and the prices on the auction site are very good.
