Suggestions for a .22 rifle?

I've got a Remington 550-1 that I inherited from my dad and I like it for sentimental reasons, but it will jam every 3rd or 4th shot. 2 gunsmiths later and after replacing every tiny component imaginable it still locks up too often to be an enjoyable plinker. That's really what I'm after in a .22 rifle.

So what are your suggestions for a nice semiauto .22 rifle? I like the Ruger 10/22 though I've yet to shoot one. Got my eye on a Marlin 795SS too. CZ 511 (assuming I can *find* one!)? The Thompson Center R-55 All-Weather looks nice too....

Well, I have both a Marlin 60 and a Savage 64. I love them both. Both are cheap and accurate little rifles.

I vote for 10/22, there's an endless amount of add ons and aftermarket parts for it.

You want a stock plinker get a new semi Marlin 60, excellent little rifles that are reliable, cheap, and pretty accurate right out of the box. You think you might want more, well get a Ruger 10/22, start with stock and for a few hundred bucks extra you can have a real tack driving little rifle with all of the cool accessaries you can shake a stick at.

The Savage 64 can be found NIB for $99. They are reliable and accurate.

My brother and buddy both have the Savages. They're good guns for the money. I personally don't have a favorite, but my 10/22 gets the most use.

Another vote for the 10/22. Most fun I've ever had with a gun! Though, honestly, it's hard to go wrong with a .22 rifle.

I have had the savage, marlin mod 60, mossy,10.22, etc., and shot many others. I like the 10/22, but it will be the least reliable, and least accurate, out of the box, most likely.the others, which all are between 100 and 150 dollars, are all okay to get.
extra mossberg mags are the hardest to find, yet it is the only one with a fully adjustable, rear site. the marlin mod 60 has no mag, and holds the most rounds, if you like tube fed. the marliin795, is very light, and very accurate like the 60, and the mags are the easiest to find, and the cheapest. The Savage has extra mags, but are a bit more money, and a bit more hard to find. but they are very solid steel. The T/c will be the best of all of these for semi auto, but they are 300 bucks or more. But they are quite outstanding!!! But then again, a Ruger 10.22 witha couple of mods, will be as much as a beautifully put together t/c, and the t/c will smoke it all day long, while having 10 times the fit and finish.

one more thing, the most fun, very reliable, and most beautiful, will be the remmy Speedmaster. they have been made the same way for about 50 years now, and are very reiliable, and very beautiful. Ther also are the only one that will shoot short, long, and long rifle. you can load up the tube with about 22 shorts at one time, which is so Kule!!!! However, they will be closer to 400 bucks, proly. If you have a gunshop around you , get a used one for under 200 bucks??? Mine was 150. and is great. that would be your absolute best bet.

Yesterday I shot the first 150 rounds through my brand new 10/22, and it was totally wonderful! I sighted it in on paper, then just plinked at paper targets, clay pigeons set on a shale bank, and other fun stuff. I'll give one more vote for the 10/22. It's a fun gun and totally affordable (starting under $200).

my thoughts FWIW

if you want an affordable, accurate, reliable rifle right out of the box get a Marlin 795. ive had one for about 5 years, awesome little rifle and i will be passing it down to one of my sons.

if you want a rifle you can tear down and rebuild to be a real shooter, even militaristic looking, get a Ruger 10-22. the 10-22's can be real pigs out of the box, heavy trigger pull, lousy barrel, too short of a mag ejector button, among other things. all that can be fixed with all the great aftermarket accessories and parts out there. i re-built mine with a Power Customs target hammer that really lightened the trigger pull, a Clerke 16" heavy barrel, volquartsen bolt buffer and a Corelite Sporter stock. however, i did buy the rifle used for $99.
