I need a .22LR plinker, probably something I could put a scope on for just-for-fun silloetthe shooting. Leaning towards a semi-auto repeater with box mag, but might consider a bolt action with box mag if it was really cheap.

I've seen and shot a Ruger 10/22 I think it was and thought that was a fun rifle, plus easy to put accessories on, I think. Any other suggestions or strong opinions on what to buy? I see WalMart has some bolt action .22s with 5 or so shot mags for in the $140 range, which is what I'd like to get away with if possible (easier to slip past the wife).

Anyone want to share their advice with me? This is to economically round out my range trips (and add even more fun) with my 9mm pistols, SKS, and Mauser 98K. I also have a Harrington and Richardson Model 700 .22 magnum, that would be perfect if it was .22LR instead of the magnum. The .22 mag ammo cost more than my 9mm!

It's pretty hard to argue against a 10/22. There are too many choices to narrow it down to the best one. There is probably no other .22 around with so many extras to be added. Just stop looking and buy one. One other option could be a .22 pistol. Everybody needs at least one of those, too. You might check out www.rimfirecentral.com for other information.

Here, let me put my flame suit on..........

Yes, the 10/22 has a lot of aftermarket support and goodies available. However, over the years, I've had 3 stock 10/22's and found them to be way over-rated. I won't call them a bad gun, but I'l never buy another nor recomend one.

CZ 452/453. It will outshoot the stock 10/22 out of the box.

a choice

my choice if youre looking for an affordable, semi-auto, out of the box reliable, accurate, light trigger pull, quality rifle choose a Marlin 795.

if you want to spend nearly $200 on a ruger 10-22 that you will at least have to replace the hammer and barrel, and stock to get it to shoot well, go for it. having said that , i own both guns and enjoy shooting both. the ruger cost me alot extra to accurize.

good luck! -Eric

get a marlin model 60 its the best out of the box for the price rifle you can ever get. i know you said you wanted a box mag, but most only hold 10 some older model 60 hold up to 18.(tubular mag)

Another vote here for 10/22. Half the fun is tearing it down and rebuilding it to the specs of your imagination. Helluva lotta fun!

I vote for marlin 60, but it doesn't have a box mag. It has a tube mag, and it can hold 15 rounds. It doesn't have as many upgrades, but it is more accurate out of the box. If you want a plinker that would work well I think.
