looking for a good paint that will withstand cleaning and such... I put ceramic header paint on my mauser (yeah it was already ugly, no harm done) but did not go through the oven baking process. It's holding up ok, but nitro solvent really takes it off...

Now the powder-coat on my rem 700 is starting to get a little rust through if I don't oil it all the time (I thought that's what a coated gun was for?) so looking to do something to it as well...

NO, I can't afford to take it to a gunsmith... the power bill is enough of a strain right now, so a gunsmith is a little more than I need to do just for a finish on a gun.

any suggestions on a good paint for this?

krylon or Rustoleum spray can enamel.
It comes in every color there is, plus cammo colors.

It gets scruffy looking, hose it again.

so the bore cleaner isn't as bad on it? one good thing, a can of bore cleaner should strip all that ceramic header paint right off the ol' mauser :D

I don't know if it is or not.
I have not used header paint, but if it is the matte finish stuff, I doubt it would be as solvent resistant as a gloss or semi-gloss enamel.

Bore cleaner can be pretty nasty stuff.
It has to be to clean bores.

Maybe you should try to not get as much on the paint job??

heh, yeah, should be a little less messy I guess. What's happened is when I get the patches wet and insert into barrel a little squeezes off and runs down the barrel, then that trail of paint will get bare of paint....

Maybe I'll try some experiments and do a piece of metal with the header paint and bake it... it's supposed to be resistant to common engine cleaning chemicals... we'll see.

I would recommend Duracoat or a firearms specific finish. They cost a bit more than Rustoleum , but lasts a whole lot longer too. I've got 4 firearms that have been Duracoated and they are holding up amazingly well. Total cost per firearm is around 50 bucks after buying the duracoat, degreaser/cleaner, sprayer, and tape. I tried the Krylon paint job one time, but most of the paint either came off due to sweat or cleaning materials.

Automotive spray paint it works great on my 870 i painted it 2yrs ago and only a few spots have rubbed thru to bare metal , and it has survived duck hunting on the west coast in saltwater so im impressed with it, you might give it a try.

Any two part polyurethane or epoxy paint should do the trick. Drop by your local automotive or marine paint supplier and see what you can get? One part paints will not hold up to bore cleaner.

krylon flat camo paint has always been one of my favorites. Who did the powder coat on your rifle? there should be any way for it to rust if it was done properly.

@loonwulf

I'm pretty sure it's a factory job. maybe it isn't powdercoat, but thats what it looks like to me. whatever it is, it's black, and it's coming off now. also I get rust on top of the black coating... the spots that it's come off of are pretty shiny underneath.

I'll check into a few of yall's suggestions,
thanks!

Interesting, Ive never seen a off the rack 700 with anything but blueing for a factory finish. I have had issues with rust and remingtons tho lol, i would guess the carbon content in the steel they use is higher then some other makers, because all my remingtons rust faster then any of my other guns. I was actually thinking about powder coating one of mine a few years ago, then i read about duracoat and the other gun specific finishes.

duracoat is not cheap, but you can do it yourself. I did. I am very pleased with the results.

I've used Krylon flat camo on GI glass stocks and it has held up very well, but it's not exposed to solvents. For painting actual gun metal I use Aluma-hyde. Applied correctly it's as bullet proof as it gets with paint. At $15 a can it more than Krylon.
