I'm not 21 yet, but FWIW, in TX, as long as I purchase via an FTF transaction and not from a dealer it's completely legal. I figure with the panic buying in effect (and of course, the possibility of a ban), I should get a pistol to complete my basic set of rifle (WASR 10), shotgun (Mossberg 500), and pistol (???).

Some guidelines:

*I have fairly large hands
*This will not be for CCW, so compact pistols not preferable.
*.22 conversion kit must be available for it (my college has a shooting range where i can arrange a firearms transfer)
*Preferably in 9mm
*Prefer to have a rail system for mounting weapon lights
*No decocker
*Fairly light trigger pull (5lbs max SA)
*Under 700 bucks preferably.
*This pistol would be my "backup SHTF pistol"

Any suggestions? I was looking at the CZ 75 SP-01 (non-decocker model), and it looks promising.

Look into a EAA Witness.
You can get them in MANY calibers including 9mm, and there is a .22 top end conversion.
No rail for lights, but you can get a trigger guard mounted light if you have to have one.

For your first handgun, get a revolver in the caliber of your choice.Don't listen to the Mall Ninjas and Sidewalk Commandos, that say "the semi auto is the only way to go". orchidhunter

Why does it automatically make us Semi Auto people "Mall Ninjas" because we prefer one platform over another?
My first handgun was (and still is) a Smith and Wesson M&P .40 caliber fullsize.
My advice, go to a gun range that will let you rent multiple pistols and try some things out. Get a pistol that fits and feels right. If your going to depend on this tool to defend your life at any time, you want it to feel like an extention of your hand, not wonky and uncomfortable.

H & K P30 9mm is exactly what you're describing. You'll love it. You can find a slightly used one for your price point - may have to look around - but you'll find one.

I recently got one for $500.:)
