Suggestions for long range rifle

There are several 6.5mm options that do not require handloading. Specifically, you can buy factory Lapua 6.5x47 Lapua, or factory 6.5 Creedmoor from Hornady (soon, in this case).

Most long-range rifles we build are in 6mm Remington, with a 100gr BT and a stout load of IMR4350 it is a hard one to beat. For long range you need a bullet with high weight and low drag/cross-section which is why a lot of folks lean towards the 6mm and 6.5 mm rounds

I say look at what you like and can afford . Seems like everybody is making long shooters. Ruger M-77 VT, Howa 1500, FN psr, Remington 700 sps, Tikka t-3, Springfield White Feather, and many more. I would not go smaller than 30 cal. when you what to get out to 1000 meters. I have been shooting 1000 meters+ since 1975 and presently shoot 1000 meters with a Springfield "loaded",a Yugo 48 Mauser, Remington 700 adl (stock) 30-06. I load the 30-06 with 240gr Sierra HPBT @ 2450 and are transonic 1300 meters+. Military sniper rounds are 175gr Sierra HPBT running@2550fps and are transonic to@1200 meters. Blitz and 800+ meters with Iorn sights with a Sharps 45-110. Blitz

The new 6.5 choices look great, but ammo is still expensive and relatively rare (from what I see)

If you're not shooting much beyond 500, then 308 or 243 would be fine and cheaper and more commonly available. 243 with heavy bullets shoots very flat and has great BC.

I'm planning to get a 243 and practice out to 500, and later get some kind of 6.5 barrel after I burn out the 243 barrel and get the basic stills down.

If I were you, I'd go with an Alexander Arms 6.5 Grendel or a 6.5 X 55 Swedish Mauser for long range accuracy. Both of these rifles have legendary accuracy reports behind them. One is semi-automatic and the other is a great bolt action rifle.
