What do you prefer in a semi auto long range .308 rifle that is accurate, reliable and durable and has available parts and magazines?

1. Armalite AR10 .308
2. M14/M1A .308
3. HK91/G3 .308
4. Cetme .308
5. Valmet .308
6. Galil .308
7. FN/FAL .308
8. Other .308

Yeah I would definitely go with the AR-10. I am very happy with mine! It is incredibly accurate, but it absolutely hates Wolf .308, and South African surplus, while these loads do reasonably well in my other rifles.

With quality handloads I can get .5 MOA consistently. Also, I've only done it once, but on one particularly good day I got 10/10 shots all on the head of a steel silhouette at 500yds, which was very satisfying, I don't think i could have done that with some of the other rifles that you listed.

I've handled only a selected amount of self loading .308's including two G3 style variants. But I think you should really consider the M1A. I've personally fired it and it's one of my favorites. According to the owner, it digests Wolf and South African stuff. Because it can digest apparently more than the AR-10, I'd ask you to consider that.

but it absolutely hates Wolf .308,
Thats strange as Wolf seems to be pretty good ammo, I wonder why that is?

But I think you should really consider the M1A.
Sorry, I new there was one I was missing, I cant believe I didnt list it.

Anyway, I wouldnt mind an M14/M1A, but I would rather have it in say a dragunov type stock or a pistol grip stock anyway and I dont know if there is such a thing. Which is considered more accurate, reliable and durable; the Armalite AR10 or an M14/M1A?

I hang my head in shame when I say the AR-10 will probably be more accurate... :( However, the M1A is plenty accurate for your needs. It should be around ~2MOA, right? Anyone? :D There are plenty of different customizing parts for the M1A though. Reliability and durability? I'm going to opt for the M1A but there are going to be AR fans yelling at me any minute.

With good ammo though, the AR10 will generally be more accurate than the M1A, and for less money. The M1A also tends to be finicky with bedding.

Wolf .308 ammunition is bad stuff, and I really hope they increase the quality control before South African surplus runs out.

The AR-10 is your best bet, it's the most accurate out of all of the guns listed. People may say that the M14 is more reliable than the AR-10, but if you're using this as a long-range hunting rifle and not an SHTF weapon, reliability isn't the first thing you're looking for. Besides, both weapons are reliable.

Well thats what I meant as a hunting rifle I just should have used SHTF instead, just didnt want to seem like a camouflaged war monger or anything.

I have an Armalite AR10 that I bought as a hunting arm and I'm very pleased with its accuracy and functioning. But shooting it much offhand can be a bit of a challenge - it's just too heavy. I'm generally OK for a ten-shot string at fifty yards, but at a hundred yards I'm using such gross muscle movements to keep it steady that I can't fine tune the wobble the way that I can with a lighter rifle.

Well, if you want an SHTF weapon that you can hunt with, go for the FAL. Specifically, a DSA STG58 Austrian.

Mine, an 18" type II all steel, is going to come in at the end of this month. :) Simple, accurate, dependable, and can digest commercial and mil-spec ammo.

I agree with rbernie. The AR-10 can make a great hunting rifle if you don't plan on packing it around all day. Most AR-10s I've seen are VERY heavy. If you're a sit and wait type hunter, then you're probably good to go.

Dont FN/FAL bayonets mount on the rifle so that the blade lies flat as opposed to sideways as on most rifles?

The AR10 that I like is the Armalite AR10A2 OD with the heavy barrel, bayonet lug, bipod, 20 round steel magazine and non detachable carry handle with an optional removable Armalite scope. I probably wouldnt be carrying it around a whole lot as it would be more of a stationary type weapon along with an RPK, I would use a Colt AR15 or Polytech AK47 to carry.

AR10 is hard to beat

I mean, you can hit it with lots of stuff and it won't break. Har, har. Yes, its a bit heavy to pack around and shoot offhand, but if you're going to be in a stand or on the ground and can rest it on something, it is very accurate. However, if you do any action shooting where most everyone else has AR-15's, shooting the AR-10 for the whole COF will win you respect no matter how many times you miss. BTW, mine eats Wolf and SA surp just fine. (But I talk to it a lot and sometimes just carry it around for fun):scrutiny:

I'm finally getting into loading my own and have been happy with it so far. I switched over to loading my own not because of cost but just something make me want to load what I am going to shoot myself.

I bought lots of Wold Ammo in .308, .223, and .45 and have never had one problem with it. It's not the most accurate ammo out there but it burns pretty clean, I never get squibs or misfires and have been pleased with it everytime I used it.

Just a shot in the dark here but what about the Saiga .308? I had one briefly about a year ago and it was surprisingly accurate. I only tried it a few times with iron sights at 100 yards but had around a 5 or 6 inch group with 5 shots. Not bad considering I barely knew the rifle and was shooting south african surplus ammo. I'm actually looking for another Saiga .308, sorry I sold the first one.

Depending on just "how far", I'd say "forget the semi", and go with a Sako TRG 42. One of 2 manufactuers on earth with an accuracy gurantee. It fufills the Finnish army's sniper rifle requirement.

But, on a budget, I'd say an M1A. Though, I have seen a Heavy Barrelled FAL/Galil looking thing before. Looked awesome, I'll fish for the link here in a few.

Already have some military bolt snipers, but no semi auto snipers, so I thought that the Armalite AR10A2 would be a good choice, accuracy, reliability, durability and parts and magazines and our military uses it, cant go wrong there.

Like I said before, I definitely suggest that you should get an AR-10 out of the other rifles you listed.

But...since you plan on hunting/stalking with this rifle I retract my suggestion. Now, I have almost no experience with all the other rifles that you suggested, but I can safely say that none of those are good hunting rifles based on the stats I have read about them. According to the stats, all those rifles are fairly heavy, and in MY experience the AR10 is way too heavy to haul around all day hunting so scratch that. But, If you absolutely NEED a semiauto hunting rifle I think you should just get a good autoloader like a Remington 7400.

But... If weight and practicality is irrelevant to you... AR-10s are just plain awesome if you ask me.

I said earlier that the AR10 will mainly be stationary along with an RPK because I can carry the Colt AR15 or Polytech AK47.
Cheers.
