Hello,

I live in New Jersey and therefore cannot carry. I am a new shooter and love the sport. I have one more purchase permit left and would appreciate suggestions on how to use it. I prefer to stay with a .9mm but am open to suggestions. I do not want a revolver or a 1911, but would like either another polymer or stainless pistol. My inventory so far (all .9mm):

1. Glock 19 Gen. 4;
2. Beretta 92FS;
3. Beretta Storm - INOX;
4. Glock 26 Gen. 4;
5. HK USP full size;
6. HK p30.

I am open to .40 or even .380 and am actually considering a Walther PPKs in stainless but would love to hear other opinions form this excellent forum.

Thank you in advance.

Not a big deal, but the use of the decimal generally goes with bullets that are measured in inches, i.e. a .40 S&W is 0.4 inches wide. Using it with 9mm means you're talking about a 0.9mm, which is about 1/6 the size of a .22.

I am considering the G17 as well - maybe in flat earth dark color. The only thing is

is that NJ has a 15 round magazine limit so the G17 is only sold here with a 10 round mag. Not a deal breaker but I wish it had 17 rounds. Thanks for the reply.

I have a similar inventory to yours. If you're looking for a 9mm, I recently added a Ruger SR9 to my collection. Nice pistol. Fun and easy to shoot. You may want to seriously consider a 22. You seem to have your 9mm bases covered. A 22 is a lot of fun to shoot, easy on the wallet (ammo wise), and great for basic marksmanship practice. I have both a Browning Buckmark and Ruger SR22. If you want one that will function and feel similar to your 9's then go with the SR22. If you're looking for something for more "serious" target work the Buckmark is hard to beat.

No problem. I wasn't trying to be a grammar nazi, just help a fellow gun nut out :)

TAKtical is right on G17, but he's missing the competition 9mm Glock, (30-something, I lost track of their models past the 20s) so you might as well go with that for your next next one.

Well If you are looking for another 9mm Luger/Parabellum Look at Hi-Powers. Others might shriek that Hi-Powers are _________ (Pick your adjective)
But I am a huge proponent of them if not a "Fan Boy"
If you are talking about .380 acp I have an affinity for Beretta 1934, and CZ 83. I also really like the Bersa but to me they are an inexpensive carry gun not really a serious range / target gun. They might not stand up to 1000's of rounds. If you have one and I am wrong I will accept your experience. My information is anecdotal.
Another Option is to look for a Revolver in 9mm Luger/Parabellum.

Since you say CCW isn't an option, I would probably lean towards one of the full-sized pistols. I'm not a fan of the Beretta 92 (just personal taste, nothing really wrong with it) so I would vote for the full size HK USP.

Nothing wrong with the .40, but I don't really see it as having any huge advantage over the 9mm (although given NJ's magazine limitations, it might make sense for you). In any case, I think there are variations of most or all the guns you listed in .40 if you decide to go that route. As far as picking up a .380 I really think their main strength is ultracompact guns for pocket carry, which are not an option for you. On the other hand, I myself have always wanted a .380 Walther just becuase its a cool little gun so if that's your motivation and you already have at least one 9mm, why not? ;)

Thanks for all the replies - all excellent suggestions.

Since you've only got 1 slot left, I'd get something quite a bit different. You've got some good, reliable service pistols already, so I would get yourself a nice range gun. Consider something like a CZ Shadow Custom or one of the other guns built by the CZ custom shop. They cost a bit more than your current guns, but hey, if you can only get 1 more while you live in that state... might as well make it a nice one.

As for the G17/34 suggestions, I agree that those are nice guns, but I wouldn't get a third 9mm Glock in your scenario. If nothing else, swap your G26 our for a 17 or 34, since you can't carry it anyways.

All good ideas ... you really have me thinking now....

22 cal. is a good idea, as are target Glocks, G17, CZ etc. Even though I can't concealed carry in NJ I do like small guns for the "cool" factor. My G26 is my "concealed" gun inside my home if I ever need to answer the door etc. and don't want to present a full size firearm. A Walther PPKs, Beretta Nano, or S&W Shield could also fit that bill.

I still have over two months to decide but very much appreciate the suggestions.

In the polymer stainless 9mm group I'd recommend the FNH FNS-9, the Ruger SR9. I like Bozwell's idea for a range gun and would include the Ruger Mark III 22/45.

An awful lot of polymer in your stable.........How about a nice steel gun, like CZ75, S&W 5906 or Browning Hi Power? These also all sport magazines at or under your NJ limit, so no 10 round nonsense as with a G17.

If I were in your situation I would go with either an all steel full size 9mm or a nice .22 target pistol. Hi Power, 92FS, or Browning Buckmark. Most likely I would go with the .22 just to have something cheaper to shoot and if you ever want to teach someone to shoot it is much easier to do it with a .22. Plus if you ever want to do something like IDPA, you already have pistols capable of being used for that but you don't have anything that could be used in a rimfire competition.

While I think everyone should own a .22lr for practicing, if you can only own a fixed number of guns, I wouldn't waste one of those few slots on a dedicated .22lr like a Buckmark. Instead, get a conversion kit for your glock or something like a CZ Kadet slide if you go with a CZ. That way, you're practicing on your actual gun, with the same grip/trigger/controls/etc., and it (presumably) won't count as a separate firearm as far as your state law is concerned.

You need a third generation s&w like the 3913 for that collection.

Hmm. There are so many options it tough to single any of them out.

Walther PPQ 9mm, Sig P229/226 in 40, or M&P Pro 9mm would all be on my short list.

I also vote for a third generation S&W. I've got a 915 that has been flawless for more than 20 years. It's fun to show up at a steel match or IDPA with an older pistol, the r.o.'s always have some cool comment.
The third gen's came in all the popular calibers too. Whatever you get have fun researching your options.... That's half the fun when I get ready to purchase, and sometimes end up with something I hadn't even considered at the beginning.
