My brother has been wanting a gun for a long time, but money is short for him (22 year old college student). We're thinking about going in with my parents on a gun for him.

Like most dumb kids looking for their first gun, he wants a hoss. He spends too much time looking at DEs. :) I'd like to get him something he can take to the range - and carry. Although I wanted him to take an interest in revolvers for his first gun, he only seems interested in autoloaders. So, that's what we will buy him. I want him to take an interest in shooting, regardless of my own preferences and ideas.

Our budget is $300-400. Obviously not enough to buy a Glock. But, there are a lot of guns for that price range on Bud's and a few at my local gun store.

What do you guys and gals suggest? :)

My used

4" Model 19 was $300 and change. It is a beautiful gun, accurate and has a great trigger in double or single action.
Good luck.

S&W is having a great sale on their Sigma 9mm & .40 cal. auto's.

They are selling them new for around $300 ($275 at gun shows / $299 at Academy Sport & Outdoors) with a $50 dollar rebate = $225 to $250 each.

They have a long hard DAO trigger pull which some people like.

I do not, so I sent mine in to S&W for their free (including shipping both ways) trigger job.

7 days turn around time and it was back and now has a long trigger pull but it's much smoother and breaks sooner - its' a very reliable gun.

I really like the way it feels in my hand and it's a high capacity (15 for 9mm & 13 for .40 cal) gun.

Really quite a good buy at NIB $225 to $250.

I hope this helps you.

:)

Ruger p95 would make a good first auto ive seen new ones on GB for less then $300
9mm is affordable and has plenty of punch for most new gun owners. I rented the
S&W Sigma ,sorry didn't like it much.
I think a revolver would still be a better first choice gun ,and any SMITH ,RUGER or even
a TAURUS/ ROSSI would do.

I'd suggest Ruger P-95 or you could call CDNN & see what they have. Sometimes they have some good deals but they don't put their prices out online you have to call.

I would reccomend taking him to a range that rents guns and having him try several that he likes and let him decide which is best for him. Chances are it may take several range trips untill the right gun is discovered but in the end he will be much happier with a properly informed decision than a wing and a prayer.
Good luck and God speed

Taurus 92. It will feel big and powerful like that DE he wants, but in reality it's just a solid 9mm.

BUT if he's short on cash, get him a .22.

The Sig 226 & 229 factory refinished are good guns at a very reasonable price.

I like the 229 a bit better than the 226.

Remember you don't HAVE to buy new.

S&W Sigma 9VE. Perfect first auto loader. Safe, reliable, reasonable ammo cost, $250. after rebate and a lifetime S&W warranty. All this and born in the USA!

+1 for Ruger P95

A used one in excellent condition will set you back ~$230 + shipping + FFL on Gunbroker.

Bud's has new ones for $300 delivered + FFL on your side.

I like what glock36 said...Let him shoot a few, and see what he likes...

I'm a twenty-year-old college student and I love revolvers. New ones, old ones, blue ones, stainless ones.

So why blow cash on a bottomfeeder, when you can spring for a wheelgun?

I think glock36 had a good idea, though. Take him to shoot a revolver. Instant conversion, I swear!
