It looks like I will be putting an M4gery together for a farsighted individual. The intended use is SHTF scenarios, including possible use as a primary or secondary HD gun. What sighting systems work best for farsighted folks? Give me your ideas. I will vet them, and present them to the individual. I still have good vision, so this is new to me. I will keep an open mind. Assume the individual will not be using corrective glasses when shooting.

Go for the ones that have larger diameter optics, easier to use in HD/CQB when you don't have time to properly sight & aim. Your goal will be to put red dot on target ASAP.

I prefer EoTech, Aimpoint, ACOG in that order for easiness to sight.

EOTech is a fine choice. I love mine to death. Worth every penny.

If you mount the EOTech closer to you you get a larger FOV, and since the reticle in the center is a hologram of an image projected +/- 40 yards away that shouldn't provide any noticeable effect on how clear the reticle appears, farther away works just fine as well.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I did tell the individual that I would check to see if some EOTech product may be suitable.

I especially would like to hear from other farsighted individuals about their solutions.

What about lasers: Crimson Trace, Insight, PentagonLight, etc?

Concerning mounting optics/lasers farther forward, possibly on the forward rail (non-monolithic), what about movement of the rail? I do not have enough experience with the plethora of rail systems available. Can this be a problem? I remain cognizant of the fact that the intended purpose is HD/CQB scenarios, so the individual will not be picking fleas off a dog’s back at 100m.

I know you said CQC rifle. That being said, I have vision problems as well. I would trust nothing but my shotgun for CQC. I do have a black rifle there next to the SG. I can use the open sights about as well as any if required, but the SG would be shouldered first.

I appreciate you comment. I will not debate you on the issue of which weapon is a more suitable HD long gun. I have shot enough deer with my 870 to understand a shotgun’s awesome stopping power. The individual I am building this for saw my M4gery, and decided to get one. So here we are. Anyway, this individual already has a shotgun(s), but does not have an ebr. I am proud to add another to the ranks.

Back on topic.

A far sighted 61 year old here!
I use a 4 MOA Aimpoint on my AR, and a EOtech on my AK for CQB purposes. They work very well . What I have to admit is I don't work AS well at night on smaller and more distant targets:uhoh: . Even with a 225 lumen Surefire on my AR, 50 meter head shots aren't happening the last 2 years:cuss:
Now a Schmidt and Bender 'Short Dot' illuminated low power high zoot optic may buy me a few more years- but VERY pricey! Hard to justify a shot over 25 meters at night as self defense anyway, so really is a non issue. I have a 2nd Gen ANPVS4 for the last 10 years on an old Colt CAR that I CAN see at night with around the ranch for predators:p especially since I added an under barrel infra red laser a couple years ago , which is the only use I can see for a laser- illumination for a NOD.:neener:

I appreciate everyone’s suggestions. I myself am testing out an Aimpoint M3 I picked up dirt cheap over a year ago. My buis stay on my M4gery at all times, and co-witness in the lower third of my optics. I will have the person for whom I am putting together this new gun try mine out and see if that works. I will also suggest a trip to a local gun shop to check out an EOTech, and maybe some ACOG’s. I did check out the Kobra’s, and they sound like a good deal.

By the way, I just ordered a Streamlight TLR-2 for $189.95 shipped from Botach Tactical for this gun. :what: Now that is a smoking deal. :D I kind of wanted to order one for myself, but I resisted the temptation.:(

Not farsighted, but am well into the bifocal phase. With distance corrected glasses I run an ACOG compact 1.5 x 24 with amber triangle on top of the fixed handle of a BM M4gery. Clear as a bell, good eye relief and FOV, good in dim light, irons usable under optic, head position ok, and 5.9 ounces total weight.

Very fast close in and can stay on an E target at 300 yds. Don't know what more you could really ask for.

If I didn't have this I could get along very nicely with an Eotech.
