Sunset AR-10 (PICS)

Rifle started out life as a JP Enterprises AR10, lightweight 20" barrel. The JP float tube was replaced by a PRI GenIII tube. Post-sunset mods included: Magpul M93A stock using the Paul Castillo buffer, proper muzzle threads, and a 308 Vortex. Paint job on receiver extension and float tube is Brownells ALuma-Hyde II OD Green.

Need a green grip with that monster. Without the ban, you can call that adjustable stock a telescopic stock and still feel good about it in the morning. Is it a flash suppressor or is it a muzzle brake? Who gives a $&%@!

All I need for He-man is a set of irons.. the Troy front and LMT rear would work well. A better set of eyeballs would help, but I make do...

I'm nearly finished with Miss Piggy, god she weighs a ton but she's more of a position rifle and not so much a walkin gun. Waiting for a proper buffer to use with the Magpul M93A that is sittin here waiting to get installed, no luck yet. Scope is gonna get replaced with a 3.5-10x or 4.5-14x Leupold Long Range mildot.

RANGE REPORT

With the Vortex instead of the JP BC comp on the muzzle, it has substantially more recoil. Shooting nose to charging handle is a little more exciting...

Sighting it in at 55 yards with a TA11 ACOG (3.5X donut reticle) got me 3-shot groups this size:

.. or about quarter-MOA center to center.

(I normally do 5 shot groups, but I was just getting it zeroed properly and didn't want to waste ammo.)

do you have a long range (175 or 190 gr) load worked up for the rifle yet?

For a while I was using the Black Hills 175gr, but then I found out that FGMM 168gr shot about twice as well.

I plan to work up a 155gr Palma load soon. It has almost the BC of the 168's, but is launched at 150 speed.

If I need to shoot further than that, I'll haul out the 50.

and what is that black rubber tarp looking thing on your scope, some kind of cover for the fiber optic? why use it?

At 800 yards, a 175gr @ 2600fps drifts 43" (10mph). The 168gr @ 2600fps drifts 48". A 155gr Palma at 2700fps drifts 45". That's really not much difference.

Armalite's AR10 telestock has a receiver extension slightly longer than the CAR15's. Thus if you were to use a CAR receiver extension (aka buffer tube) with Armalite carbine buffer, it would bottom out before reach maximum design travel- the bolt carrier wouldn't get all the way to the rear.

Paul Castillo ( [email protected] ) did some R&D on this problem and developed a short, stainless buffer using a tungsten deadweight which allows use of any CAR length receive extension-- in this case, the Magpul M93 stock.

The "ACOG Prophylactic Device" (APD) you see on my TA11 is a piece of bicycle inner tube I use to moderate the brightness of the fiber-optic-lit portion of the reticle. When the reticle is very bright, it appears larger and seems to obscure more of the target. Dimming it down to a dull red or all the way to black by pulling the rubber over the entire fiber-optic tube makes precision firing easier, especially on small targets.
