Though I own, load for and shoot auto loader's, down deep I have an unquenchable thirst for magnum wheel guns, and the .357 mag. is no exception. There is just something special about the roaring barrel of a magnum revolver loaded up to the teeth.
I load an assortment of bullets and for the .357 mag. I like to grab a box of 110 gr. XTP and I've used Gold Dots for short barreled guns too though Speer doesn't recomend loading them to those velocities due to bullet deformation. I load them with 24 grs. of H110 or 296 and the velocities out of even my snub nosed model 66-5 is horendous. I clocked them through my chrony at a little under 1800 fps. Out of the longer barreled revolver's it's up from that almost another 100 fps. Often times I'll carry those loads as my SD ammunition with a couple of speed loader's with 125's and the other with 158's, also loaded to the teeth.
I load some hotties for the AL's too, but it just doesn't feel the same as when your holding a revolver in your hand discharging near 2000 fps rounds with SAMMI estimated chamber pressures running 40,000 psi and much higher. I shot one of our giant jack rabbits, again, but I had a good center mass hit at about 100 yds. with one of those 110's and it litterally blew that jack appart. He flipped through the air and over end with his guts streaming every where, really cool. Now I know what Speer was refering to as bullet deformation, ha! ha!

i don't reload for my .357 mag, but i do own one and hope to get more. they're definitely awesome to shoot. Anyways, i just wanted to say that your descriptive step by step details on what happened to the rabbit cracked me up!!!......great visual images! cheers........hvychev77

Yep the 357's are fun to shoot for sure. Betcha will have a LOT more fun with a 44 MAG.:D You can go bigger and I have some of these also but a 44 is a fun manageable revolver for sure. I like my SBH's best, one with a 7.5 and one with a 10 inch barrel.

I've used 296 behind a 125gr HP for over 30 years, it hard to beat. Does wonders on armadillos too. As a SD load I thinks its and over kill due to over penetration. Here in Texas were responsible for every thing our bullet hits. I do not know what your state laws are but that's something to consider.

Y'all can have all that muzzle blast to yourselves, but yea, lightweight bullets can shoot like a laser in the .357. :)

Although these aren't going to be the fastest or by any means the most powerful 357 factory loads I've come across, they reliably give me a wonderful flash every time I pull the trigger which is a crowd pleaser at the competitions. It's CCI Blazer 158 gr jhp. Here's a video I took with my 686.

Im trying to develop my own personal .357 Magnum load, I've got a Ruger GP-100 and a Tauraus Clone of a K Frame S&W with a 3 in barrel. So far the best load as far as a happy balance between velocity and accuracy is 6.8 gr of HP-38 with a 125gr XTP, very accurate out of the Clone haven't tried the Ruger yet haha

You are the only one on the planet getting 1800 FPS out of a snub nosed revolver.

HMM, SEEM LIKE A high RISK LOADS TO GUN+ YOUR FINGERS!! remember what you post "could" get a new-b hurt, just saying.....

........remember, this is the internet.:D

.....I rest my case.

I too love shooting the .357, but see no real reason to expose my firearms(and myself) to damage from above max loads. Premature forcing cone erosion cause by light bullets being pushed by huge amounts of slow burning powders is something I tend to avoid. With the availability of many calibers with more power and velocities than are readily and safely obtainable from the .357, I see no real need. BUT.....what others do with their guns is their own business. As long as they aren't shooting next to me.
