hello,

i have a 16x Super Sniper scope with a mildot reticle. it's mounted on a remington 700 .308. i've use it before, but i haven't shot my 700 for a few months. it worked fine the last time i shot it. last week i brought it out to shoot at the range and the reticle was really blurry. i tried adjusting my head back/forth, up/down and i couldn't see the reticle clearly. the scope has the usual w/e knobs and a rear focus.

the rifle/scope has less than 800 rounds thru it. i thought the scope was history. i brought it home and started browsing the web for a new scope. i pickup my rifle to put it away in my gun cabinet and i took a look thru the scope again and the reticle was in clear focus. wierd. anyone know what's going on? thanks in advance.

According to the SWFA ad...
In sub-zero temperatures or searing desert heat (-50 degrees to +130 degrees Fahrenheit, and altitudes of 30,000 feet to depths of 15 feet in salt water) the waterproof, shockproof, fogproof Super Sniper performs.

I would think the scope would be nitrogen filled to eliminate fogging as with many scopes. If you know definitely that it was not the exterior lens fogging, I would send it back to SWFA, or whoever warranties the scope for replacement.

thanks for the help. i should clarify that it was not fogging up. the reticle was literally blurry.

thanks.

You know I ran into this same problem with my Nikon scope on my .308 about a month ago. I had just been shooting it recticle was fine. Then I had taken a few minutes to tend to a couple of other things . When I came back to the bench and looked through the scope and the recticle was blurry as hell.

Then I realized my eyeglasses were on my head (I had proped them up there so I could read something) when I put my glasses back on the recticle was fine.

I would have someone else look through the scope, have you noticed that road signs are harder to see lately???

Could also be that the focus ring got turned while it was stored?

Or it could be something wrong with the scope.

Do you wear contacts or glasses??? maybe you need some???

haha. i'm not getting that old! i had my ar with me with a bushnell scope and that was crystal clear throughout my day at the range.

the focus ring puts the target into focus. the reticle should always be crisp. but yeah, i futzed with that too because i had nothing else to futz with and that didn't help either.

Or it could be something wrong with the scope.
yeah, i'm thinking it's a hardware problem...i have to admit tho i'm almost trying to find an excuse to buy a new scope...

From what I read about SWFA, this probably won't provide you with your excuse--sorry!--'cause they'll fix it for you.

Tell you what; you buy your new scope, and sell me your problematic SS for dirt cheap (I mean it's broken, right?) ;) Everyone wins!

thanks for reminding me...i think they have forums over there...i'll try post there...

:) i don't know if it's broken tho...when i got it home the reticle was crisp and perfect...

The eye piece focus (on the ocular) only focuses the reticle, NOT the sight picture.

The parallax is adjusted (the sight picture) further up on the ring with the numbers on it.

yeah, but if the diopter adjustment gets moved, the reticle will not be in focus. Also if you do not adjust the diopter setting on a scope properly it can be in focus under some conditions and not in other (in that case, it is usually not super-crisp under any conditions though).

Not familliar with the super-sniper, but form the pics, i would suspect it is the checkered ring behind the large kurled focus knob at the back.

Right.
The diopter adjustment on the eye piece focuses the reticle.

I'm thinking he turned the diopter instead of the parallax adjustment.

You need to focus the reticle while looking at some white clouds or a light colored wall at least 20 feet away. Once focused, it can get blurry if your vision changes.

I think the instruction manual that comes with SS scopes describes the process, if not, go to the SWFA website and hit the forums.

What others have said. The ring behind the, "+ 0 -" should focus the reticle.

If it does not focus from lock-to-lock of the ring, there is something wrong with the scope. The reticle on my 20X SS gotten from SWFA listed tot he right a few degrees after less than 100 rounds atop a .17 HMR. Sent it back to SWFA and they sent me a new one (which has been working fine).
