I want to buy a rimfire suppressor. I've heard of trusts. It sounds like they lost a bit of usefulness during Obama.

I'm not married, I don't have children, I'm the oldest sibling in a family where dementia gets us before death.

If I just register the suppressor to me then my executor (not yet named) can transfer it from what I've read once I pass. But what happens if dementia takes me me before death does? My youngest sister would likely being dealing with my assets as my guardian and if I live enough in dementia care, my assets will have to be sold to support my care. I don't want to put her in legal jeopardy because she is handling something she doesn't understand.

If she has to sell the house, I don't want her to have legal problems with the suppressor in the gun safe. I'm thinking at a point further out that I would add a sibling, likely the next generation to the trust so my sister would not have legal complications with dealing with my modest estate. I'm 63, I figure I have 10 years before this is a worry and I hope to take care of it before it becomes a problem.

The Silencer Shop has a one shot trust. Who is it filed with? How is it amended? What do changes cost? Is it a viable solution?

In a separate thread I'll ask for advice on which suppressor to purchase.

Correct, it will transfer tax free on a Form 5 to the beneficiary designated in your will. I recommend putting a copy with your will.

A very good reason for a trust. You can make as many people members of your trust as you want.

The Silencer Shop has a one shot trust.
Single Shot Trust.;)
It's a trust for one NFA firearm, submitted with only one members information, fingerprints and photo.
Adding additional members after the tax stamp is returned does not require sending anything to ATF.

Who is it filed with?
A copy is sent by Silencer Shop to ATF with your Form 4. You'll also get a copy for your records. It does not need to be filed with anyone.

How is it amended?
Depends on your state, most you just need to add a statement adding/removing a member and having it notarized.

What do changes cost?
Free, because you make the amendments.

Is it a viable solution?
I think so. At least 80% of my transfers are to trusts, and for the last four years 90% are to Single Shot Trusts.

Suppressor came in recently. I used the single shot trust and the Silencer Shop kiosk. That thing was a hot mess. It didn't want to let me log into it, didn't want to scan my dry from being old and a working man's hands. The android phone they use to capture my photo wouldn't let me log in. Finally I got the gent that was helping me to suppress the automatic upper casing of the first letter of my email address and I logged in, they snapped my picture, and we got it done.

I spent over two hours at this. I kept in good humor and the counter guy kept apologizing.

Question:

Should I decide to buy another suppressor, likely a .30 cal, do I have to do the picture and print thing again with Silencer Shop?

Thanks,

Clutch

Pro tip: Jergens lotion makes awesome fingerprint scans from the worst dry fingers.

Upper case doesn't affect any part of an email address.....they are not case sensitive. Your password likely is.

He should, no reason to take more than ten minutes. Then again he may not scan prints that often.

Now that your prints are on file, you never need to visit the kiosk again. Your photo will be valid for a year, SS will prompt you if you need an updated photo.
