I think this belongs in here. I have a legal, NFA registered M11/9mm and suppressor. I buddy told me someone offers a suppressor repair/upgrade service where you send them your old 'wiped' suppressor and they cut it up, build you a new, better suppressor, and put the old serial number on the new part.

1. Do any of the NFA dealers here know if that's legal?
2. Do any of you know who might perform this service if it is legal?

Thanks

P.S. My M11/9 needs repairs to the sear/trigger assembly somewhere. Where can I send it for repairs? Or can I get parts?

So long as the registered model number (this means configuration) and manufacturer are the same as recorded on the original registration, I would think it would be OK. I am unaware of any authority that says "repairs" of an NFA item have to be performed by the original manufacturer.

I think the bigger risk would be for the company doing the "rehab" on your old unit. They could get gigged for "manufacturing" without a license if they are just destroying the old unit, and building a new one from scratch. Moreover, I don't think Jimbo and Billy-Bob's machine shop are allowed to possess your suppressor unless they have proper licenses that specifically authorize such possession.

I would recommend that you send your suppressor back to the original manufacturer for any repairs or upgrades. If the original manufacturer is no longer in business, you might contact a current manufacturer to see whether he can service your unit.

I sent my Gemtech HALO back to Gemtech (damage from baffle-strikes). They repaired it and upgraded it.

These guys will have parts for a mac11:

Name names - your post is way too vague. Which manufacturer said they could rebuild the tube? It sounds like BS. They're not allowed to remark someone elses markings on a new tube. And who made the original silencer? Costal?

What they can do is re-stock your old tube with a new baffle stack. That is fairly common, as many of the early mac11 silencers were complete and utter trash. Im talking designs that an idiot with no understanding of fluid-dynamics would think up (brass eyelets??, wire mesh??). These things, in my opinion, were not worth the value of the tax stamp at all.

Maxim's designs in the 1920s were far superior everything for the next 60 years. Thankfully modern designs are pretty impressive.

It's vague because, like I said, a buddy said "some company" could do it. I believe the original manufacturer of the suppressor is Cobray. It is the original type with rivets/eyelets and crap in it, a stack of discs, and 3 wipes. One about midway up and 2 in the nose cap. I'll have to check. The wipes wore out after a couple hundred rounds (of course) and I haven't been able to find replacements, if it's even legal to buy them. I didn't research very well when I got the gun/suppressor (as you can see) but I only spent a grand total including stamps so I'm okay with that. I'd like to actually be able to use the suppressor again, though.

I'd contact Doug Melton at www.srtarms.com and see if he could do the rebuild for you.
He'll keep the original tube, but load it up with k-baffles. It will be several decibels quieter when you get it back. Tom Bowers may do it too (www.subguns.com). Cant hurt to ask.

There are a few others small shops that can re-vamp the baffle stack, but names I cant remember at the moment.

Looks like you already had it done but I was browsing Norrell Arms site yesterday and saw that he rebuilds them also Click Here for $175 with new baffles and no wipes if anyone else needs work done (about 3/4 of the way down that page).
I don't think you can have extra baffles or wipes lest the ATF have a reason to charge you with constructive possesson.

Anything specific you want me to check out?

Doubletap, that sounds like a great deal. I'm concerned about the 4" of added length... but I guess for the price you can't beat it. I'll look into it. I doubt my local classII/III guy has shipped my suppressor for rebuild yet. Thanks for the tip.

Yeah I could do without the added length but it would be nice to have it rebuilt, be more quiet, and do without wipes. The suppressor kinda takes away the shorty aspect anyway  You could call them and see if there are other options that don't add length.
