I've been reading posts & looking at threads without the results I want, so I will just up & ask: what are good sources/manufacturers for suppressors for rifles (22lr & 6mm Rem, specifically)? I have heard of a few, but my knowledge base, I discovered, is obsolete along with the MAC 10 45 suppressors with wipes I am familiar with. I'd like to do a little varmint shooting with my noisy 6mm without spooking every critter (& human  ) for miles, and the 22 would be really handy for arboreal rodent control in the 'hood (legal in mine, out in the county). Could one can suffice, or are two necessary? The licensing aspect is straight forward enough, I just don't have any info on different makes. References & opinions welcome...
Thanks,
George J.

silencertalk.com is a forum dedicated to suppressors and a good place to read up.

Get a suppressor you can disassemble for cleaning, especially the rimfire one.

Don't skimp on price. With the regulations the way they are, you're pretty much stuck with whatever you chose. Do your research and be prepared to pay ( a lot :cuss:).

I wish I'd set up a trust rather than going the individual route.

they

If you want a silencer that actually reflects its namesake then dont even consider centerfire rifle cans ie .223 & .308. They generally start at $1,000 and arent quiet at all. The quietest you'll ever get a .223 is like a hi-velocity 22 rimfire report. Not bad, but not quiet. Ammo must be subsonic, so that leaves you with basically the 22 rimfire, 9mm, 40 and 45acp. Any other pistol cartridge that can be reloaded to stay subsonic too like 45 LC or 44 Special. Those mentioned are by far the quietest platforms. Most people get caught up in the Super Solider/Cop magazines and wannabe a sniper so they get a $1,500 .223 can that weighs almost 2lbs and sounds like crap cuz the .223 cartridge is screaming out over 3,000fps. Keep the gun-ammo combo under 1,080fps and you will have quiet.

We had another thread about the term "silencer" vs. "suppressor". Almost everyone uses the terms interchangeably, including the government and manufacturers themselves.

Modern suppressors work very well and have a virtually indefinite service life (if not used incorrectly). A centerfire bolt gun with a suppressor is dramatically quieter than one without. It's like a .22LR - like the man said - but without the "pop" of the gas escaping the muzzle. Many people who need to control pests but not annoy neighbors use them.

Here's a short article I wrote about the basics of centerfire rifle suppressors

In terms of bang for buck for a recreational rifle shooter, a .22LR suppressor is the most fun and has the most utility (on .22 pistols too), and suppresses to the quietest final dB amount. After that, I would put centerfire bolt gun silencers, which really change what it's like to shoot those rifles. I would rate semi-auto centerfire suppressors the least useful or cost effective because additional noise comes though the action and there is additional back pressure in gas systems such as the AR-15.

I second Innovative Arms. Phil does excellent work. His cans are comparable to the major brands, and his Apex .22 can is particularly nice. A take apart .22 can for under $300 with the tool is hard to beat.

Outstanding Info!

Gentlemen,
This is exactly what I was looking for! And if one will not suffice for both calibers, the 22 LR will be first. This just made my day! Outstanding article, Zak, and Al & LT the pointer to Innovative is lagniappe to this pseudo-Coon-A.. in Sumter ;)
Cheers & regards to all,
George
