Recently I have had the itch to attempt to quiet down a rifle, I remember a few years ago a co-worker showing me a video that had a suspressor with spinning turbines like what a jet engine has, and the gasses spun them and it was supposed to be the cats meow for supressors.

I dont think I am imagining this, I do remember being very intriuged by it.

anyone ever seen or used one? I have been searching for a few hours today and have come up empty.

I have a few bolt guns that I shoot pretty regularly, and lately I have been thinking about trying out a can because I have never owned one.

30-06 is my favorite to shoot, so looking for something that can make it quieter, im thinkin $2k ballpark is about the most I would want to part with, want something quality, even if its a foot long or more, as long as it works.

what would yall recommend?
is the spinning turbine supressor a fragment of a dream I had?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Are you talking about the OSS Helix? Nothing in the suppressor itself actually spins, but it does 'spin' the gasses. The advantage of it was that it doesn't suffer the gas back pressure of typical suppressors and as such, keeps semi-auto and auto guns cleaner.

My hunting partner uses one of the early versions. Works fine and pretty much as designed, but it is a bit heavy. They have a titanium version is that very competitive weight-wise, however.

The downside is that I think you can find quieter suppressors, but they will have typical back pressure issues.

im not sure, but I could have swore on the video he showed me in 2015-2016 ish, it had baffles that acted like a turbine and spun from the gas expanding.

I have never shot anything that had a suppressor on it and nobody I know has one, what would you reccomend for a 30-06 or 300 win mag, length is no issue I dont care how long itnis

I don't think you could have a spinning turbine that would spin up fast enough to match the pulse of shot.

Correct.

The gas impulse is very fast and very short, not much time to deal with it. That's why fluid dynamics modeling programs don't work for cans. Supersonic gasses just behave differently.

Redirecting of them is done with abruptness, and features that cause the gasses to work against themselves. That's the purpose of clips and scoops on baffles.

You can generate a certain amount of swirling, and it can be beneficial, but rotating blades won't do it. You have to force the gasses of centerline with a vector. Creating a Vortex in the blast chamber to trap more gas and keep it there longer is the principle in my helix port brake design with offset ports at compound angles:

I have been searching all day for the video I saw, and I started to think that since I cant find it and it seems noone else is making that style it must have been a flop.

I am still interested in buying one I just hate judging any purchase off of youtube videos and website reviews.

is it feesable to get a 30-06 bolt rifle to under 140 decibles with a can?

I do know that hollywood is not the real world but are people able to go to the range and not need/use ear protection?

with all the brands and models available I have to say I am really not sure where to start other than ask here.

Easily with a decent design. I get 131 at shooter's ear on a 22" .300 win mag with my 9" accipiter model.

Numerous quality production cans will bring .308 & .30-06 well under 140. Just not monocore junk or cheap things with a bunch of washers in them.

Yeah it would be like running a jet engine on coal.

Maybe the OSS works as advertised, but they are playing kind of fast and loose with material transport.
How do you "force" gases to go where you want them to in an open volume, and what makes gas flow through all those little channels besides pressure behind it?

there is alot of technology being put into suppressors these days, I have been patiently waiting for advancements like we see today before I considered buying one.

I was going to buy a new rifle this summer but I am going to get a can instead.

I specifically remember the video and it did have turbines for baffles and they did spin, in the video it did sound like a jet engine without the rumble, obviously the technology went nowhere or others would know about and it would be findable in a whole afternoon of searching youtube and the web.
It did intrigue me and I thought the having moving parts would be a good way to slow down and relieve some pressure from the gas that is expelled, for all I know it could have been a fake video for that matter

There is always something better in the future, right? The sooner you commit, the sooner you get more hearing protection.
Pretty much.

I personally buy for serviceability first and foremost. I'm not on the company dime, I want something that can be easily taken apart for service or cleaning.

Sure my cans are years old and not the lightest or quietest. Nobody really cares that much at the range.

This OSS video says they went through an endurance test with the military. I guess it was 2800 rounds or so.

I only just took possession of an OSS 7.62 can. I haven't even shot it yet. We will see. Planned for AK use mostly.
