Surplus 308?

If you live in the Bay Area, Los Angeles County or Orange County in California, Aim will not sell and or deliver ammunition to you to you. I e-mailed them and asked them what laws in Orange County prevented them from delivering their ammunition and they admitted there were none. They said "upon advice from our attorney we choose not to."

I choose not to buy anything from Aim until they change their unfair, anti-gun policy and I hope more shooters and collectors join me. :fire:

I'm not sure how that is "anti-gun" (unlike the state you live in), and if that's the advice they've been given I suppose they should follow it (or at least give it consideration). I love AIM Surplus ;).

I am a big fan of AIM as well. They also have good prices on the 7.5 Swiss ammo. I am not going to blame them for California's gun laws.

It is not the only stuff, but it seems to be the best quality for the cheapest price that I have seen lately. I bought a 980 round case last year.
 
Scattered about online dealers and through gunshows you'll be able to find large amounts of Indian and South African. At least that's what i've seen lately. The large quantities of Portugese and Australian seem to be disappearing for the moment.
 
Besides South African, I still see Indian and Argentine available. Stay away from the Indian stuff. The Argentine is pretty good. Also, there is quite a bit of Lake City on the market right now at decent (not great) prices.
 
I bought a battlepack of the Indian stuff a few months ago. I figured it couldn't possibly be as bad as everyone said it was. I was wrong... :eek:

Is the Argentina-made Australian ammo as good as the real Australian-made stuff?
Is the the Yugoslavian or Pakistani ammo any good?

Well, with the apparent shortages of milsurp 308 I have been looking into
alternatives. I know the mention of Wolf ammo is a rather polarizing
issue but you may consider that option.

The newer polymer Wolf works in my 308 rifles (the 223 also works
well in my ARs.) It even works in the fluted chambers of my HK and HK clones. While Wolf may be dirty and not the most accurate ammo it does
make for cheap practice ammo.

It might at least be worth trying in your guns as an alternative

Yeah, me too. I remember kicking myself for not buying more Hirtinberger when it was plentiful. Now I've done gone and waited too long to get any Australian or Portugese. :eek:



I can get these types of ammo at my desired price point:
South African
Pakistani
Argentine-contract Australian

I've never used any of these before. Anyone have some experience with these? I'd really appreciate some opinions.

SA: Good. Not super, but good, especially for the price. I've heard of one or two people getting batches that use an older type of tar sealant which gums up fluted chambers (HK), but this is a rare exception. I haven't seen it personally.
Pak: Bad, almost as bad as Indian.
Argentine: Very good. As good as Aussie IMO. Maybe slightly hotter than your usual .308 too. Getting hard to find.
Venezuelan: You didn't ask, but I'll mention just because I bought some. OK for plinking. Well constructed ammo, you won't hurt your gun, but the bullets are frequently undersized so accuracy is terrible. I use this when a friend wants to rip off a few mags full of ammo rapid fire for fun or some stress relief :)
Israeli: I've had very good experiences with mine. Some duds (1% maybe). Not as accurate as the good stuff, but OK. I'd buy it again if the price was right.
Any NATO country: Identifiable by the + in a circle, preferable if you can find it!

My rule of thumb (quoted from someone else): Don't use the ammo from anywhere that you wouldn't drink the water.
 
You missed the recent Indian stuff century had for sub 7 cents a round, boxer primed, non corrosive. Not near as bad as some would have you believe.

Co-worker of mine banged out a couple hundred rounds of Paki the other day. Very good groups, zero reliability issues.
 
I recently bought 200 rounds of South African and will never ever again.

Horrible stuff. About 1 round in 10 is over size and has difficulty chambering. The stuff is inconsistent (about 100 times more so than one would expect from mil-surp). With Portugese out of my Garand (chambered in .308) I could maintain from a rest 100 yard groups between 2 and 3 inches if I did my part. With the South African crap I'm lucky to get a 6" group and most 5 round groups run 8".

I really miss the Portugese mil-surp. Now that was great ammo.
