Any Italian surplus gurus out there.

I have a surplus Mannlicher-Carcano of unknown caliber. It is made by Terni. I'm trying to get the stock off but can't get the screws that pass through the trigger guard into the receiver loose. They are rusted fast.

The gun has some rust and some decent finish and I believe could be fired, but I want to do more research and investigation on it.

Can anyone with experience with these guns give me some guidance or direct where I can get more information.

Thanks

Need much more information. And a picture would be very helpful.

If it's military, as it sounds like it is, it's either 6.5mm or 7.35mm. Use a caliper on the muzzle to get a better idea there.

As far as getting an absolute answer on the cartridge, take it to a gunsmith and have a cast taken of the chamber.

Thanks JWF:

Anyone have experience loosening the trigger guard screws?

I'll try to post a picture later.

Obviously you need to apply some good rust solvent. I suggest PB Blaster or Kroil and let it set a day or two with several applications over that time.
Have you stripped the screw heads yet? Perhaps an impact driver would help.

I've been putting liquid wrench on it, to no avail. I've also been using an 18volt commercial grade hammer drill. The screws are pretty deep so there no problem getting purchase.

The production year may help identify the caliber, assuming it wasn't commercially converted. The year may appear as Roman numerals, counting from 1922, the year il Duce acceeded to the balcony.

watch out, a number of them were converted to 8mm by the nazis. If it has the Eagle on top of the receiver, then you should go get it checked by a gunsmith

As skeet king mentioned, one variant of Carcano was rechambered to (not built for) the 7.92mm JS. These rifles are not particularly safe, since 8mm Mauser ammo is far hotter than either the 7.35x51mm or 6.5x52mm, and since a substantial amount of steel had to be removed for the much larger cartridge.

However, these converted rifles are not terribly common on the surplus market. Most Carcanos you'll find are 6.5mm rifles.

6.5, if you need any supplies let me know. I still have a store of parts and some ammo.
